By runs scored the offense was 2% above NL average, by wRC+ it was 3% below average. That's about as average as it gets. It's badness can really only be overestimated, not underestimated.

Sure, if you want to say bad for a playoff team, that is objectively true. But the Braves just won the World Series with the 2nd worst offense in the field. They shut out the Astros, who had the best offense in baseball, twice in six games. The Royals won the World Series in 2015 with a 99 wRC+. Anything can happen in a small sample. The playoffs are overwhelmingly random.

The Brewers also had two offenses last year, pre-Adames trade (161 runs, 26th | 83 wRC+) which was actually objectively bad & post-Adames trade (577 runs, 7th | 103 wRC+) which was objectively much better.

Of course I want the offense to be better next year than it was last year, but we don't need to go all the way from bad to good, just from average to better than average, which is a far less daunting task.

You can throw out any stat you want to prove your point, but there is no way that the offense we put on the field last year was average, it just wasn't.

Yes, I've supported my position with statistics, because they are an objective representation of how the offense performed. What are you supporting your position with? "Because I said so."?

Your assertion that the offense wasn't average last year is just as objectively false as your earlier assertion that they did not have a legit bat last year.

That's nice that the numbers show the offense was average but let's be realistic, it is what has been holding this team back for 4 straight seasons. Even when Yelich was playing at prime roided up Bonds level it was still just an average offense.

Sure, but that's not the argument. People keep saying it's a "below average" offense. It's very clearly, objectively, an average offense. Could it be better? Yes. Would they be better positioned for post season success if the offense were better than average? Absolutely! But it's an average offense. It's not a below average offense, which is what a lot of people continue to try to insist.

Average or below average. It's meaningless because it all depends on your definition of "average". Regardless, either average, below average, or somewhere in between, the offense isn't good enough to win it all.

I think people are underestimating how bad our offense was last season.

Brewers averaged 4.56 runs per game vs an MLB average of 4.53 runs per game. NL average was a little lower without the DH at 4.46 runs per game.

Brewers position players posted a 97 wRC+. Taking out JBJ it would have been about 102.

The offense was almost exactly average last year.

Using position players only skews the results because AL teams have to field an extra batter. The Brewers 97 wRC+ for non-pitcher position players was fifth worst in the NL (ahead of only Miami, Arizona, Pittsburgh, and Colorado).

Simply put, that's not good enough for a team that hopes to compete in the playoffs.

Ok, let's say our offense was average...

We had WAY above average pitching, so coupling that with an average offense wasn't enough to go deep into the playoffs.

Maybe we can just agree on that much and move on.

A 97 wRC+ for non-pitchers is, objectively and by definition, a below-average offense.
