Brawl from 1974 - Ted Simmons takes on half the Cubs roster

In honor of his induction into the Hall of Fame, I give you one of the more bizarre baseball brawls I've ever seen:

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

I find the beginning of that to be the most interesting. I've always felt if the umps really wanted to avoid heated arguments and confrontations they should just ignore the coaches/players and keep the game going. Manager wants to continue arguing with the home plate ump, fine. He can stand next to him with live AB's going on. Player won't leave the diamond because he wants to argue about a call at second base, sure, stand there but keep your head on a swivel.

About 10 years ago my buddy was at Miller Park watching a game and down the row from him was a scout. He sent a pic to us. At about the same time, the TV broadcast was showing that scout. It was Ted Simmons. I texted back to my buddy who it was. He wondered if he should go say hi and eventually went over to him. He said TS was very nice. My buddy told him he belonged in the HoF. He said "thanks, maybe some day".

I was shocked my buddy didn't recognize him because he's easily the biggest Brewer fan I know and a baseball savant for everything. So of course I played it that he was stupid that he didn't Simmons and I did. I never told him the only reason I knew was because of the TV broadcast.

I'm still amazed that I was watching 5 hall of famers on that 82 team.

I know, right/ It reminds me that people should pump the brakes with this "2021 Brewers team is the best Brewers team ever" nonsense and we can debate it at season's end. The only way this year's team surpasses 1982 is to win the World Series.
