I think we are about to see what it looks like for a team that lost it's HOF QB, but didn't invest in the QB position behind him. Pressure James and go for the picks.

I think Brees was actually more of a limitation for their offense last season than a help against good defenses that forced him to throw downfield - that's not to say the QBs left on their roster now are going to set the world on fire, just that Brees' HOF credentials should not include his performance/talent level from the 2020 season.

To me it's all about preventing Kamara from having a monster game and making life too easy for Winston/Hill/whoever is throwing passes for the Saints. And, it's about keeping their D line honest and running the ball offensively to set up some deep seam opportunities for Rodgers throwing the ball - Oline needs to play well against a pretty solid Saints defensive unit.

They went 3-1 without Brees last year. I don't blame them for sticking with what they have.

They did have Michael Thomas those four games I believe.

They went 3-1, but I doubt they go 12-4 last year if it was the same all season. Maybe they can fix Jameis Winston from his INT history. Or maybe he remains the same. With all the QBs moving around this year, it would seem a better chance to get someone with a better history.

New Orleans has a lot of talent on the team. They won't be bottom feeders, but I can't see them as anything more than WC contenders. But my OP was more about the "doom & gloom" or "everything is rosy" responses to Rodgers leaving this past offseason. We will actually get to see what happens...I wasn't trying to predict the outcome.

Ironically, Drew Brees goes into the HOF with one SB win under his belt and that probably only occurs due to bountygate (or at least marred by bountygate).

They played:

Falcons (4-12)

Broncos (5-11)

Falcons (4-12)

Eagles (4-11-1)

All of those teams finished last in their division. They also aren't stickng with what they have, they are going with Winston instead. Hill started the games last year without Brees.

I don't think the Saints are horribly confident with what they have. I just think they decided to not go chasing sloppy seconds QBs that cost a lot of money/draft picks/players and realistically won't get you to the Super Bowl.

I think he'll be OK but even prior to the 30-INT disaster he was throwing too many picks. Maybe a Payton offense can help him out. I think he'll be good enough that they're a formidable opponent most weeks and he's exactly the kind of journeyman blah QB that traditionally goes 37-45 for 445 yards against our defense.

I think we'll win by 10 though.

Part of the reason Winston was throwing the picks, he had Evans and Jackson at wr. Both those guys are good for deep balls, Winston naturally took quite a few chances throwing deep passes to those guys and it resulted in a fair amount of ints. This offense will run much differently, his number 1 job will probably be to get the ball into Kamara's hands one way or another. That type of skillset doesn't require as much talent as throwing the deep ball consistently well. Also not many coaches are better offensively than Payton, I think Winston will be asked to do less than he was in Tampa and it will work out well.

All that said, hard not to like GB this week. No Brees, no Thomas. Stack the box and force Winston to beat us. On offense, I think we move the ball with ease both running and passing. I think this one will be more or less over by middle of Q3.

Kamara might catch 15 balls on Sunday.
