Wisconsin vs. Penn State game thread

LouisEly
Terrible quarterback play. Terrible offense. Terrible coaching. Terrible pass defense in the second half. This program will always be second tier until they recruit a real quarterback that I won't hold my breath on happening.

I’m fully on the side of a full tank job. Barry is now out of there. Let the new AD install a new regime of football. This style is old and stale.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I mean this was supposed to be that guy, but he ain't it.

One of the worst parts of this is the OL which is our only big advantage, was completely whipped for most of the day, including the tackles in pass protection.

Excluding sacks, UW rushed for over 200 yards. I wouldn't say they got "whipped", but they really struggled against their 7-techniques in pass pro. Should have had a TE chipping them.

Mertz looks like every other crappy QB who doesn’t know how to protect the football. So disappointing.

He is a far better player than he has shown. But when the play call is run left then run right then run up the middle and then no motion pass plays you are not going to do all that much as a QB. It is like Chryst is stuck on the no motion no WR bunches no anything modern just run 1950's football plays. Chryst is just an idiot when it comes to running an offense and this team will be nothing but a tune up game team for Ohio State and other teams.

I don't understand how he is still the head coach. I have seen high school head coaches who have a higher offensive play calling IQ than Chryst. He maybe a good head coach but he is absolutely horrible at running an offense. There is just no game plan other than run left run right run up the middle and run a basic pass play.

Defensively it is extremely easy to game plan against Wisconsin. It is basically stack the line because 90% of the plays are going to be runs to the right left or up the middle. Pass plays are also easy to defend on short and medium yardage plays you play press coverage and on passing downs you play 10-15 yards off of the WR. The only thing with Mertz that the defense has to plan for is his arm and that is it. Chryst won't make an adjustment during the game because he is incapable of doing that so you don't have to change your defense all that much. There are very few slant routes ran by the WR and the Badgers don't run any fade routes either. They have a big athletic TE but refuse to run a single fade route for said TE. You don't have to game plan for that on defense because you know Chryst won't call that play.

So on defense you are only game planning for WR that will run an occasional go route, some basic curls and some stop and go action. That is the whole playbook for Chryst's offense especially at WR and TE. Plus you never really have to play more than 2 CB's because Chryst hardly ever brings in more than 1 or 2 WR. Someone needs to tell Chryst you can still run the ball with 3 or 4 WR in the game you don't need a FB to run the ball all the time and you don't need 2 TE's either.

Chryst is the problem and the Badgers will never be anything more than what they are until they get rid of him and actually find someone who understands how to run an offense.

When the Defense can pretty much t off on your offense because there is no misdirection, no motion, and no really anything creative it means you have to win every single play in the trenches. That's a near impossible task against a really good team. These games are often won on the margins and that's where Chryst falls short. Yeah they had two fumbles inside the 5 but I'm not convinced those both turn into TDs. And PSU missed a chip shot FG and an extra point.

The passing offense reminds me of late McCarthy era in GB except UW doesn't have Aaron Rodgers to bail them out.

Chryst isn't anywhere near the coach that McCarthy was or is. Chryst has a very talented player at the QB spot but he still won't make adjustments at all to his game plan or play calling. He is what he is just a speed bump for the better teams.

At least I don't think there will be to much discussion about belonging in the playoffs.

There is at least 2 more losses on the schedule.

Without better QB play it might be 5 or 6.

To whom?

I see at least 3 more loses for the Badgers:

Notre Dame, Northwestern and Iowa. They could even lose a fourth against Purdue. I am just hoping they lose 4 games and Chryst finally gets fired.

Yeah pretty much everyone knew their playbook and it wasn't all that complex to start with, MM was coasting. Disappointing that the Mertz era hasn't opened things up. Still a game we should have won playing Badger ball, no excuse for the late fumble or the early false start on first and goal. Really tough one to take, I brought up an Iowa game from a few years ago but I think that was just one botched red zone drive not 3.

Minnesota at Minny for the Axe is no sure thing.

Maybe Mertz does develop into his pro QB style potential, so not calling to pull the plug right away. But perhaps looking at other types offensive schemes may be worth doing in the future.

It’s worth noting that the program won several conference titles without a “real quarterback,” even if they weren’t 5-star recruits. Besides the one-year transfer by Wilson, the best modern-era quarterback was Bollinger, another mobile quarterback who could throw, allowing for another wrinkle to the offense: some option play and QB runs.

That losing streak against Penn State will start to be a measuring stick against Chryst, though. Should be able to win at least one-third of those games; now Chryst is 0-3.

Mertz can and will play better but our coaches do him no favors. No plays early to settle him into a game. Just hand him 3rd and 8’s all game and hope a pass to Barry’s boy will bail them out. It’s brutal.

Have they won any games against OSU and PSU under him?

Have they jumped up and beat anyone that they were even somewhat underdogs?

Based on what, exactly?

Sorry, when you make bad decisions that lead to interceptions and miss wide open receivers, that's a QB issue, not a scheme issue.

I know fans thought he was the second coming, but at some point we may simply need to acknowledge that we hitched our wagon to the wrong horse, and that horse looks an awful lot like Alex Hornibrook 2.0.

He reminds me of Bart Houston. Higher level recruit with big arm that never masters the mental side of the game.
