Organizational Player & Pitcher of the Year

With no games today & the season wrapping up in a few weeks thought it might be interesting to take a look at some of the candidates for Organizational Player & Pitcher of the Year.

Looks like it's probably a couple two tree horse race at this point on the position player side...

Joe Gray (413 PAs | 264/366/536 | 19 HR | 87 RBI | 65 R | 19/2 SB/CS)

Joey Wiemer (390 PAs | 294/400/536 | 20 HR | 57 RBI | 74 R | 25/6 SB/CS)

Felix Valerio (430 PAs | 307/416/494 | 10 HR | 72 RBI | 78 R | 27/8 SB/CS)

Seems like it's been Gray's to lose for most of the summer, but Wiemer's heater the last month plus might be too much to ignore, while Felix has sneakily put up pretty similar production.

Pickings are a little slimmer on the pitching side where I would guess it is Ethan Small (59 IP | 1.68 ERA | 76 K) in the driver's seat despite missing time with injury. Carlos Luna (69 IP | 2.33 ERA | 74 K) was making a pretty stealth case before landing on the IL himself. Maybe Jake Cousins (39 IP | 1.59 ERA | 63 K) as a darkhorse, though I don't think they normally give it to a guy who spent most of the year in MLB.

I’ll admit I’m a big Valerio guy so I’ll have to go with him just slightly over Wiemer. He’s hit at every stop so far and has shown a little more pop this year. Plus, he walks more than he strikes out which is obviously a tremendous skill set. I’m really excited to follow all three guys next year though.

I think I'd toss Weston Wilson into the mix as a dark horse.

Yeah, he's older, but there's a case for him: Prior to his thoracic outlet surgery, he was leading Nashville in homers as part of his .902 OPS, played all over the diamond, and was a mainstay of the lineup.

a couple two tree horse race

I feel like I’m grading class assignments even when I’m reading brewerfan.net

In the Bronx, this sentence would seem pretty normal. :tongue

As for the pitcher/player of the year...generally if the race is close, I'd guess that the prospects are going to get the nods over players out of nowhere or minor league free agents. So I'd probably guess Wiemer and Small as the winners.

Yah, despite the time missed, it is almost certainly going to be Small. Luna’s season was cut short too, Ashby has probably spent too much time in the majors to win, giving it to Barker would be adding insult to injury, Reifert and Floyd haven’t done quite enough to win it out of the bullpen, and there is no way they dig down to the complex leagues for Segura.

I would lean Valerio for player of the year, but there are several other options I would understand too.

I have to change my mind on this one. It has to be Wiemer. Guy is having one heck of a season.
