1981 Division Clincher- Tigers

Apologies of you have seen this before. I have seen similar footage about five years ago on YouTube, but it was pulled shortly after. This was posted earlier this season on Classic MLB1, and it probably deserves a watch if nothing else than to remind us of how hungry Brewers fans were for playoff baseball. Talk about a ramped up crowd!

Also, it includes some interviews of Buck Rodgers, Sal Bando, and Rollie Fingers after the game ON FIELD with the crazy Brewers fans. Never saw those before….

There is a full game version too but this ending version gets the big 8th inning and Rollie’s finish. Simmons reaction takes the cake.

It's funny but at the time I had mixed emotions. 1981 was such a disjointed contrived year. They played two months, then were on strike the next couple months and then instead of picking up where they left off, they decided to declare teams in first place in the first week of June automatic entrants to the postseason. Those teams then played the so-called "second half" basically for fun and teams that were in last place when the strike started were suddenly even with teams that had performed much better. The Brewers who ended up with the best full season record in the division were forced to go through an extra layer of playoffs to get to the league championships. That Brewer team should have been in the ALCS and not had to beat a Yankee team that was essentially playing exhibitions in August and September.
