2021-08-19: Brewers (Woodruff) at Cardinals (Lester) [Brewers lose, 8-4]

Eye Black
This has been reported, Brewers did pursue but Scherzer only wanted to go to a west coast team.

Yeah, my only point was, the logic behind pursuing Scherzer despite having three pitchers who are arguably having superior seasons is because you might be worried they can’t sustain this level of success into uncharted territory as far as innings pitched in a season.

Bears mentioning that all three aces have reached or are imminently approaching their career highs for innings pitched. I worry about this fact more than anything else about our title pursuit. Not that the Brewers really could do anything more than what they already have about it, but it could be a factor nonetheless.

Yep. This exactly. We may end up needing a lot of runs come playoff time. Or just down the stretch even. But the Brewers have done all they can to give themselves a shot.

I firmly believe they pursed Scherzer because he could provide insurance in case of injury or tiring by one or more of our studs.

You don’t pursue Scherzer for “insurance”.

Yeah, Woody was maybe trying something with the offspeed too....

I want to sweep as much as anyone just because Cardinals, but if the Brewers lose, they'll still have done exactly what they needed to. Started 8-2 on a big 19-game stretch, plus extended the division lead.

This was my thought too...looked like he was trying to work on something with his secondary pitches. I don't mind that at all. Obviously can't be acting like the division is decided but the team is in a position where they should start making sure they are well positioned come October and if his secondary pitches need work would rather see it happen sooner than later

This one is definitely not over with our lineup and their love for the dramatic, but I would definitely piggyback Ashby with woodruff for a few starts. for some reason I thought n 2019 he had a ton more innings, the exhaustion narrative may hold some truth in it. Heck, with a likely 9.5 lead give him a turn off and then build up.

This Cardinals team is annoying. Every player on their team looks like a jacked up high school halfback from a rich suburban high school.

A good way to put it.

We'll be seeing a lot of them, but I'm glad 7 of the ten will be in late Sept. Would love to clinch before that last series in STL.

Thinking about these three, I think the Crew should be happy with 2.

Didn't hit much in games one or two. Got some breaks, pitched really well, came out ahead. Left a lot of runners on base tonight, didn't get the usual execution from Woodruff.

Let Milner sop up the next 5 outs, hope you get a Cardinal bullpen implosion, and, if not, you're in good shape with your most reliable relievers for a home series with a team you match up well against.

Curious about why they took Adames out. Seems like straight up double-switch with Escobar would have made more sense. He did make the last out.

Sure it's just getting Urias a rep at short, or giving Wily a break, or maybe he's just nursing a small something. Not worried about it, but thought it odd.

Every single time I see Harrison Bader, I think of this character from A Christmas Story:

Did you know this kid played little Michael Anthony in Van Halen's Hot For Teacher video?

It checks out. Incredible. Also one of the paperboys in Better Off Dead, apparently.

All these great credits to his name and yet the poor guy still doesn't merit a Wikipedia page.

This game thread should put an end to the "people only show up here when we do bad" argument.

Give it another loss or two. A couple key Debbie downers have mysteriously gone missing recently and I’m sure they’re lurking around ready to pounce once we hit a rough patch.

Ah yes, the eminent return of the triple eights.

I can hardly wait!
