After the fireman experiment didn’t go well for Ashby earlier in the year, this seems to be a natural compromise: start and pitch 1-3 innings. I won’t be surprised if we use Ashby to open a game or two for our righties if we make the postseason.

No surprise that MiLB seasons with six-game series only and Mondays off will become the norm again in 2022 and likely beyond. Seems everyone involved with player development loved every aspect of the scheduling, initially brought on for Covid protections.

I get why those who write the game summaries (usually, but not always the announcers) often "protect" players. By that, I mean, you'll always read summaries that include the Brewer affiliates stranding runners in big situations when there are strikeouts with men on 3rd, less than two out, etc. And nearly all of the time, the players who failed to come up big in those situations aren't mentioned by name. That's fine, especially at the lower levels.

But this is AAA. And sorry, but RHP R.J. Alvarez is 30 years old, has big league time, but if not for looking up the details and linking to his walkoff error, no one but the folks in the stands in Memphis and those listening to the game would have known.

13-Inning Affair End In Blue Wahoos Walk-Off

Cantrelle Records Triple In First Double-A At Bat

By Garrett Greene

After a scoreless 11th and 12th, the Shuckers had a great scoring opportunity in the top of the 13th. Korry Howell started the inning as the bonus runner and advanced to third on a single by David Hamilton. Mitch Longo then flied out to shallow left field, holding Howell at third, and Hamilton was called out on appeal for not touching second on his way back to first on the fly out. Garrett Mitchell then grounded out, ending the Shuckers scoring chance.

This is what we call an "Eduardo Escobar".

Prior to the fateful final frame (ooh, alliteration!), fantastic pitching by J.T. Hintzen late, as the 11th and 12th inning ghost runners for the Blue Wahoos never advanced past 2nd base, four K's combined in those innings for Hintzen.

In the 11th, Alexander Palma struck out with a man on 3rd and only one out.

In the 12th, Hayden Cantrelle struck out with a man on 3rd and only one out.

Cantrelle, as noted, had contributed earlier (triple, walk). For Palma, it was an 0-for-5 night.

RHP Taylor Floyd made his AA debut, 1.2 scoreless innings, as RHP Zach Vannaro did him a solid and stranded two of Floyd's baserunners.
