Technically, the magic number to clinch a general playoff spot is 4, It’s currently 5 on the Padres and cardinals and 4 on the reds, but since the cards and Padres play this weekend, one is guaranteed at least a loss, which in theory lowers it to 4

I hope we’re focusing on the division race.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

The division race is really inevitable at this point. I know there is still crazy math out there, but its done.

And the Mets just tied it up in the bottom of the 9th.

Yeah, I’m just talking about the official playoff spot magic number

I might be wrong on this, but isn’t the magic number still 5 until (if?) the Cardinals lose tonight? They still only have 69 losses (to 70 for the Reds).

If you’re unable to see into the future, then you are technically correct.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Sure, but for purposes of the magic number I think we should be looking at winning the division. I don’t think we’re going to be seeing any celebrating when they wrap up a wild card berth.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Nope, not this year at least. Hopefully just a few more days.

I’m still shooting for getting it down to 1 so the game we’re going to Sunday could be the clincher.

Nobody is guaranteed a loss. The number is not affected by this.

If the cardinals play the Padres in a game, One will lose, that’s a guarantee

Of course, but there's no guarantee either team loses a game in the series, therefore no effect on the magic number. If the Padres or Cardinals sweep the number is still 5 on the sweeping team.

The Giants did a little bit of celebrating on Monday when they mathematically clinched a playoff spot. But their situation is different because their division race doesn’t figure to be decided for another two weeks, and they might not end up having anything to celebrate on that count.

For the Brewers it would look pretty silly to have a locker room champagne celebration one day and then another one for clinching the division the next day when both are foregone conclusions.

Yes, but when I posted this, the Padres hadn’t lost yet last night, so theirs and the Cards number was 5, so therefore guaranteed to move to 4 for one of them

Any time I see the Brewers celebrating, it's a good thing.
