Magic Number

I had to look up how to calculate a magic number and it's different from what I thought. The formula is (# of games remaining for the leading team + 1) - ((# of losses for trailing team) - (# of losses for leading team)).

So as of this morning, Aug. 18, the Brewers have played 120 games, leaving 42 games left. Add 1, which is 43.

Difference in losses:

Cin 9 (Magic number 34)

StL 10 (Magic number 33 - Stl has played 2 fewer games than MKE, which explains why the magic number isn't lower)

Cubs 22 (Magic number 21)

Pitt 31 (Magic number 12)

Wild card contenders (one of each group will win their division):

Atl 9 (34)

Phi 11 (32)

NYM 13 (30)

SF -5 (48)

LAD -1 (44)

SD 8 (35)

You can get there a lot faster without looking at number of games remaining.

For example, if you want to calculate the Brewers magic number to eliminate the Reds it’s:

163 minus (Brewers wins plus Reds losses)

Today that is 163- (73+56)= 163-129=34

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

How many games can the Reds win if they win all their remaining games? Currently 65-56, so 106 is the most they can win.

How many do the Brewers need to win to get from their current 73 to 107? 34.

That's how I do magic number. Seems a lot easier.

Same. Pretty simple.

huh, I always thought the easiest way to find out the magic number was to just let someone else do the work and then read about it in a thread like this.

There is a site that stays pretty up to date on this all year long.
