Box: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 12, DSL Rangers #2 Squad 4

A 4-3 Crew lead exploded with a seven-run 6th.

Monster game for rookie 18-year-old Venezuelan LF Diego Larez, 4-for-5 and a double shy of a cycle. Listed as a CF upon signing, he has only seen action in the corner spots thus far (11 games, 3 of those as the DH). The home run was Larez' first as a pro (30 AB's, and his OPS jumped from .744 to 1.040 in the still-small sample). The triple was his 2nd.

17-year-old LH-hitting Dominican corner OF Luis Castillo, DH'ing here, singled three times in five trips.

It's been a rough rookie season for recently-turned 18-year-old Venezuelan 2B/3B Miguel Briceno (2-or-43 entering the game). But we'll give credit here, a double (all three pro hits are now doubles), and three walks. Briceno has only fanned four times.

First time in four pro games 19-year-old RHP Miguel Segura has given up runs (three here).

Scoreless inning in a pro debut for 18-year-old Venezuelan RHP Kevin Briceno.

Teams combined to steal nine bases in ten attempts.

Box: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 7, DSL Orioles #2 Squad 2, seven innings

On paper, this lineup had struggled, as you see in the YTD box score numbers.

17-year-old Dominican corner OF Duncan Garcia was 3-for-4 with two doubles to lead the way here.

Garcia stole three bases in four attempts. The team was 6-for-8 on the basepaths.

Every batter reached at least once.

Box: ACL White Sox 6, ACL Brewers Blue 5, eight innings (regularly scheduled game)

The Blue Crew scored their ghost runner, but a one-out single ended the game in walkoff loss fashion.

Soon-to-be 21 years old, 2019 32nd round RHP Jefferson Figueroa tossed four scoreless in his start.

Two more hits, including a double, for 18-year-old Venezuelan catcher Jeferson Quero (DH'ing here). OPS now .917.

2021 5th round middle infielder Ethan Murray (Duke) singled twice and drove in his first two pro runs. He manned second base in this game.

Box: ACL Brewers Gold 5, ACL Mariners 3

Go-ahead three-run 7th as SS Eduardo Garcia's two-RBI single capped the frame.

18-year-old RF Hedbert Perez doubled in four at-bats (.342/.388/.620, 1.008 OPS).

Nice work by two 2nd year RHP's, each in their first stateside season, Dominican native Brailin Rodriguez, who celebrated his 19th birthday in this game, and Mexico native Ramon Carrasco, who turned 19 the day before (Monday).

Box: Down East (Rangers) 4, Carolina 2

Pre-Game Media Notes

Murphy Allows Two Homers in 4-2 Loss

The Mudcats snapped a five-game winning streak with a 4-2 series opening loss in Kinston

CF Sal Frelick 0-for-5, one K in his Mudcat debut.

C Wes Clarke threw out two of three baserunners and reached base twice (BB, HBP) in his first game with Carolina.

***

Down East remains the big divisional foe, and this tightens the race, as the summary noted.

Just to put into context what Hedbert Perez, Eduardo Garcia, and Jeferson Quero are doing for their age at the AZ level.

Below is where the 3 rank out of 79 players in WRC+ minimum 50 abs.

7. Hedbert Perez 149

12. Jeferson Quero 137

21. Eduardo Garcia 120

32. Jheremy Vargas 111

All aged 18 which is little young for the league as the average age of the 79 qualified is 19 years old. Yes I am reading into things way too early. But this a big step for us considering our history of how international signings have done right out of the gate.

Agreed. Really exciting checking in on those AZL box scores & seeing the highly regarded guys putting up some numbers to go along with the scouting reports, even if it is small sample territory still.

Also should be fun keeping track of guys on the pitching side. Stearns & company haven't invested as much in terms of bonuses for international arms, but given the system's uptick in pitcher development over the last five plus years it will be interesting to see who emerges as guys start to get more innings under their belts.
