2021-08-03: Pirates (Kranick) at Brewers (Houser) [Brewers lose, 8-5 in 10 innings -- Houser doesn’t allow a hit over 6.1 IP and exits with 4-run lead; things quickly unravel in the 7th]

The Brewers hitters had a pretty good day against Scranton, PA native Max Kranick in his last outing (July 28), he went 5.0 IP allowing 10 hits, 6 earned runs, 1 walk, and 3 strike outs.

On the flip side, Adrian Houser has been fairly dominant against these Pirates hitters through 96 plate appearances faced:

.147 BA / .181 OBP / .231 SLG

I'll risk the jinx, but without Frazier the current Pirates line-up seems very no-hittable. I'm sure Gamel will single handedly prevent the Brewers from pulling it off. But between the defense and high strikeout pitchers we are due to get one at some point.

So I was looking at Houser on fangraphs after seeing that 3.69 ERA. He basically seems slightly worse in almost every way than last year, yet his ERA went from 5.3 last year to 3.7 this year. Last year he had a slightly better k rate, better bb rate, better hard hit rate, better barrel percentage. The only notable numbers that were better in 2021 than 2020 were hr rate and LOB%, which are subject to wild fluctuations. More or less, he's the same pitcher he was last year simply a bit more lucky and with a much better defense behind him.

After looking a bit, I'll tweak this to say he has been slightly less unlucky this year than last. A 61% LOB number is pretty darn unlucky unless you're a complete launching pad. Currently the lowest on the Brewers this year with more than 20 IP is Suter with 73.1%. Also BABIP in 2020 was the highest of his career by over 20 points with not a significantly different(and certainly not worse) batted ball profile to 2019 or 2021. So more or less he's about a 4 ERA pitcher with a pretty big sample at this point.

So are you saying, that defense matters?!!
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Checks out.

Identical 108 FIP- in both 2020 & 2021 for Houser.

Brewers posted an infield defense of -13 DRS in 2020 (-3 1B, -8 2B, -3 SS, +2 3B) vs +6 DRS so far in 2021 (+2 1B, +3 2B, +2 SS, -1 3B).

I think that ground rule double just robbed Adames of an inside the park HR. The way Gamel had to lay out for that any bounce off the wall and I don't think he gets until Adames is rounding 3rd.

I know its probably not gameday thread material but it happened on gameday...Brice Turang was promoted to AAA. Moving quickly through the system excited to see what he can do in AAA!

That, along with our #1 prospect being traded should move him up in the next poll.

I was like, "wait... what?!" and then it hit me. :laughing

Has anyone considered that the Dbacks management came to Brewerfan to see who the Brewers’ top prospect was, and promptly traded for him? Anyone?

No, it would have been a triple. He's just going for the cycle tonight.
