Passan- Mets won't sign Rocker

Thought this deserved its own thread:

The Mets must have low balled pretty hard, or even just pulled the offer. I feel like Rocker had so much to lose here. He's going to lose a year of MLB salary to try to get picked top 10 again and there will be major questions about his health next year.
I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

No he’s not losing any MLB salary at this point.

As a side note, it’s been reported they never made an offer. Isn’t that a requirement to get draft pick compensation the following year? At least I thought it used to be.

It is a requirement for most players. I heard this year was different in that Rocker was invited to the MLB pre draft medical event and declined. Since he declined, the Mets didn't have to offer the normal percentage to get the draft pick.

Oh he’s getting paid in 2021?

Well, since he never made the MLB squad, no, he isn’t.

It's been reported by Jim Callis that the Mets did not make an offer to Rocker (presumably b/c they wanted the pick next year). This will hurt his career, but there's not much you can fault him for.

This situation is admittedly a bit tough on the player. The Mets simply get a pick and bonus pool money next year, Rocker has to wait a year to have a shot to enter MLB. That's a ton of development time and risk. For all we know the Mets were severely lowballing him. I would like to see the players union put some focus on the minor leagues and draft pick situations like this one, but I'm guessing they'll entirely focus on service time/free agency.

In this case, if a team doesn't at least offer say 50% of slot...he should be allowed to sign anywhere up to slot value of the pick and have that money go against your draft or international pool or something. There's just gotta be a better way than he has to wait a full year before he has a chance to latch on with a team due to stupid red tape.

I think he should've had the chance to sign for something like 20% of slot with the Mets and if the Mets choose not to make that offer, just let him become a FA. He should get some interest from Indy league teams and that could help his stock/development.

From what I've read, the Mets didn't offer a contract to Rocker because of medical concerns. If teams find medical issues with players they draft, they don't have to offer contracts to them. Rocker didn't participate in the pre-draft player MRI sessions. (Maybe because he and Boras knew he has an underlying medical issue/injury, and they were hoping teams didn't find out about it?)
