Anthony Rizzo to Yankees

I guess I don’t really agree that the return was that light for Rizzo. Alcantara would probably be our top rated prospect. Fangraphs slotted him at number 2 for the Cubs. They put vizcaino at 11

Alcantara is definitely a good prospect that any team should want, but I'm quite certain he wouldn't overtake Mitchell for our top spot. I would guess he would slot in 5th behind Turang, Small, and Perez for us.

I was surprised the Cubs did so well on the Rizzo deal. Seemed like a very solid return.

Cubs are picking up all of Rizzo's remaining salary and that increased the value of the return. Since Yanks are paying substantial amount in luxury tax, that was worth a lot more than the $5 million or so they are saving.

Yes, the salary was huge for the Yankees. According to Cot's, they are at $207,631,173 on the Competitive Balance Tax AAV, with the luxury tax limit set at $210,000,000. They are trying to keep under the limit to reset the timer so they can go over again next year without as substantial a penalty.

Fangraphs had Alcantara ranked as the #120 prospect in baseball, and he's 19 so he has a good chance of shooting up the charts over the next couple of years. My question regarding the Cubs is whether they are going to try to completely tank the next couple of seasons to get high draft picks to pair with their really young prospect group, and then throw a bunch of money at the team in a few seasons when guys like Alcantara are MLB ready. Their top three prospects are in AA, and beyond that most are in Rookie or A ball. It'll be interesting to see what they get in their last few deals today, but I wouldn't be surprised if their goal is to shoot for a top five draft pick for the next year or two.

They may re-sign Baez to an overpay just to give the fans a reason to come to the ballpark and spend money. He's young enough he could still be good if the next wave is ready in a few years.

So, wait a minute. Because the Cubs are paying rizzos salary, it doesn’t count against NYY’s payroll? That’s garbage. NYY gets the player, the prorated salary should be on their books, no matter what accounting trick had to be done to make the deal happen.

This is also the reason the Cubs got anything of significant value in return in terms of prospects - keeping their payroll below luxury tax thresholds for 2022 probably carries just as much if not more value to the Yankees than Rizzo does the rest of this season - The Cubs being a large market with a garbage team allows them flexibility to rebuild their farm by buying prospects via paying what's left of their veteran players' contracts they are trading away. It's just big markets being big markets.

Looking forward to signing him away from the Yankees in the offseason ;) He’s my big offseason target.

Rowdy will fix that for ya.

I actually love Rowdy too. I had him penciled in as part of a return in a Hader trade this past offseason. One of Cain or Bradley will most likely need to be moved to have the money for a guy like Rizzo, but it’s manageable. It would give us the chance to put Yelich in the 2 hole followed by Adames and then Rizzo. That’s a nasty middle of the order. Mix in Narvaez in the 5 hole against lefties with a re-signing of Escobar for third as a possible 5 hole hitter, we would have a great lineup!

Anyway, go Crew and let’s get ROWDY!
