Brewers acquire Eduardo Escobar from Diamondbacks

I like the acquisition of Escobar because we didn't need to touch some of our upper echelon prospects. Fills a need, a corner infielder with pop.

Escobar, Tellez, and Adames. How is that for in-season acquisitions in the infield?

I like Urias but his throwing has been an adventure. He's a young player with quite a bit of development left, hopefully. He will still get at bats.

I have to admit I have never focused on Ciprion beyond seeing his name when we signed him, but history says we can trust our brass on what they thought they were giving up, i.e., a smaller, slender infielder.

It’s probably worth noting that during his time with the Twins Eduardo Escobar was considered “a clubhouse favorite.” Presumably he was well liked in Arizona as well.

Alberto Ciprian (not to be confused with 2018 draftee Albert Cipion) has been crushing it in the DSL this year as an 18 year old 3b. I dont know what he signed for or when he signed but I dont think it was a significant amount. Clearly a lottery ticket and hats off to Arz if they pick a winner with him. We wont know for years on him.

Alberto Ciprian signed for $500,000 in 2019. While he still falls into the category of “lottery ticket”, he was a somewhat expensive international acquisition for the Brewers and likely isn’t just some total throw away prospect. Obviously being in the DSL he’s someone teams have a much better handle on than prospect writers.

As a comparison, Hedbert Perez signed for $700,000 in 2019.

Really like the acquisition. Fills needs and makes the roster deeper. Also like the advantage that Escobar has as a switch-hitter.

Add in a good clubhouse guy to the chemistry that Piña, Urias, and Adames have going right now, and that could pay off in more of those intangibles that playoff teams typically have.

Still a chance to add one more bat, but I wouldn’t anticipate that. Definitely need to add at least one more high leverage reliever before the deadline.

So, is Shaw just getting straight up DFAed when he comes off the IL? There just isn't room for him.

Has to be. It was probable before, now I can't see any way forward with Shaw. Nice guy, yada yada, let's go win some ballgames, and he's not part of that formula.

Between the dollar figure and the early performance, you could make the case he was the third best prospect on either DSL team, behind only Chourio and Mendez. Not a top prospect by any means, but perhaps one of the better long-term sleepers.

Wouldn’t be surprised if he finds a home in Nashville for August…..odds of him latching on elsewhere in MLB can’t be high.

The real benefit of this trade is that they have creepy whisper audio ready to go when he makes a good play

Switch hitter who plays multiple positions, which is nice. More of a trade that gives the lineup more depth than one that straight up makes it better, as offensively it's not an upgrade on Urias. But I've also said it before that the Brewers starting lineup is fine offensively, and that it's the plate appearances going to the players beyond that which has hurt. Escobar is a big step up from Shaw or Reyes, so I do like it.

I was actually curious to see what Hummel could've done, and figured him seeing time at 1B was a prelude to that. But I'd also much rather lose him than giving up a Mitchell/Turang/Small/Ashby type of player for our offensive acquisitions. Ciprian has had a nice start to his DSL career, but it's so incredibly hard to predict anything with the DSL guys. If he turns out to be a good player many years down the line, then good for him and the Dbacks. When in any kind of "win now" mode the players who are 4-5 years away from having an impact can't be hugged too closely. Keep the aforementioned guys who could have an impact while Woody/Burnes/Hader etc are still here, trade from the lower minors.

Escobar is a good pickup, but giving up the six years Hummel was going to provide for the Crew is going to be something that we're going to regret down the road. Hummel could have been a cheap replacement or Garcia next year, part of a longer-term solution at first. Heck, he could even have helped spell Narvaez with a bat much better than Pina's. Or, he could have made Narvaez a trade commodity - again, a cheap option, especially given Feliciano's lost season and Henry's vanishing power stroke.

Cooper Hummel has been freed!

Yeah, but not the way I was hoping...

Unless Escobar extends, I think this rental is going to be about as bad as the Garrett Cooper dump over the long haul.

I think you’re over valuing Cooper. Guy has a career 3.5 war in 5 years, 1.2 of that coming this year. And now he’s out for the rest of the year. Decent player but nothing to fret about. Also is 30 years old.

Wonder if a team is going to take the risk on Hiura or if he's soon to be headed to Nashville for the rest of the year.

Nashville. It would be a crazy sell low on Hiura is Stearns were to deal him now.

Agreed. He could still be a player. Let him dominate AAA.

CC said about a month ago that to you don't really see what a hitter is going to be until about 1500 AB's. Hiura is only at about 1/2 that. They aren't selling on Hiura now, especially when they'd be selling pretty low. He's shown he can hit. The league figured him out. Now he needs to make adjustments, just like the league did. That's how it works with a lot of players. He just hasn't adjusted as fast as he needs to. Or, he was a flash in the pan and he sucks.

I guess.... to be fair, and I suppose someone has to play Devil's Advocate (gulp) we got 2 innings out of Tyler Webb, and he gave up 6 hits and 2 ER, and then the following spring SD claimed him off of waivers from us. So yeah. GC has turned out to be a decent bench bat/part time player, but Tyler Webb was just nothing for the Crew.
