Each team’s most untouchable player

mtrebs

I receive daily emails from MLB and today’s had an article about each team’s most untouchable player. I was trying to think who I’d list for the Brewers. A few years ago it would have been easy: Yelich. But with his struggles and our strong starting pitching I was thinking that it could be one of our big three. It could even be Adames as this point, but since great pitching is so hard to come by I’d think it would be down to Woodruff, Burnes, and Peralta. It’s almost impossible to pick one but I’d lean towards Peralta due to his age and I believe his contract is most favorable among the three.

So, I opened up the article to see who was listed for the Brewers to see if they agreed with me. They had Yelich listed, which I disagree with completely (unless they mean untouchable because no one would take his contract, but they didn’t say that). My guess is that the writer still views Yelich more like his former self.

Here’s the article: https://www.mlb.com/news/most-untouchable-player-for-every-team?partnerId=zh-20210725-442944-mlb-1-B&qid=1026&utm_id=zh-20210725-442944-mlb-1-B&bt_ee=z506s030jUg%2BwUT758jJhJMzyZUZXL9uf3%2FzLWEppPeF7W4WAuh3b8bZ6i6HxTmI&bt_ts=1627223295288

Yeah, I have to agree with your take. I have to think that if the Brewers were approached with a reasonable offer for Yeli this week, they’d probably have to consider it if for no other reason than getting the contract off the books.

Also agree with you. The article claims that Yelich is our best hitter to justify the choice, which itself is false. Adames is, and a healthy Wong, Garcia and Urias have been at worst on par with Yelich. Factoring in contract situations, Freddy would also be my choice.

That is just plain lazy on their part.

If someone offered a trade for Yelich at this point and would take that contract, we'd have to do it...

I think Woodruff and Burnes have better stuff than Peralta, but his contract has 5 more relatively cheap years on it, with the last two being club options. The other two have more three arby years coming up after this one.

If I had to choose, I’d pick Woodruff. He’s been durable and has been performing at a high level, longer.

It's ridiculous that this is true this early in the contract. What a giant whiff.

Worst part is, it's not even early in his extension. His extension doesn't even start until next year(he was under contract next year already, but the extension changed his salary from a 14mil team option to 26mil guaranteed.).

The cynic in me keeps saying after Yelich's 2019 knee injury and that offseason, he and his team knew something wasn't quite the same and jumped at the chance to do a contract extension before the performance decline was evident on the field.

There hasn't been anything Yelich has done since spring 2020 that is proving the cynic in me wrong, even though I desperately hope it is.

I thought that the extension was premature at the time since he was controlled for so cheap for so long. Had they waited one more year...then they would have waited another year...and then the Budget would look very open the next 5-7 years. Oh well. I still like Yelich well enough and he hasnt been unplayable like some other recent guys (Shaw, Aguilar, Hiura),

I too think the article was pure fiction. I think Yelich right now would be the FIRST contract the Brewers would want to rid themselves of if they could. He isn't anywhere close to the player they thought he was going to be and certainly not even in the top 10 LFs anymore.
