Trade Deadline Rumors

Brewer Fanatic Contributor
According to Heyman it isn’t a done deal yet…

Padres are surely very interested and aggressive in their pursuit of top trade target Max Scherzer, but source insists there are “multiple teams” still with a chance. Those teams are believed to include the Dodgers, and perhaps the Giants, Red Sox and another team.

Go "another team"!

Padres close to acquiring scherzer

Your move Stearns.

The idea of getting in a Chess match with a team not even in your division is somewhat laughable, IMO.

I mean it's not like they will see them in the playoffs or anything(likely), right?? Again, does Stearns looks at the Brewers roster currently and go "nah, we're good as is, I like our team, let's sit where we are and HOPE it all works out".

P.S. IF he acquires a bullpen arm(or two) before the deadline, not a single person here has the right to say "there's his counter". It doesn't work that way.

If the playoffs started today the Dodgers & Padres would play in the wild card game, with the winner facing SF in the NLDS while the Brewers would be matched up with the Mets in the NLDS.

There is a possible scenario where the Brewers could make it to the World Series without playing either of the Dodgers or Padres.

From Rosenthal:

Sources say other teams are still trying to top Padres for Scherzer. Nationals and Padres essentially have agreed on players in trade. Situation may be complicated by Scherzer’s ability to veto any trade and effectively choose next club.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

How in the absolute world do you even have the faintest idea that he is going "nah, we're good"? I mean wow, man. They literally picked up one of the better bats on the trade market less than 24 hours ago. Simply because he wasn't one of your preferred "OMG big nammezzzz" doesn't mean the guy wasn't a viable and astute pickup.

I would love it if the Padres overpay and send a bunch of prospects to the Nationals for Scherzer. They are a small-to-mid market team with a limited competitive window and a budget that has already been hurt by bad decisions. There's a 50% chance they get booted from the postseason in the wild card game. Let them sacrifice their future.

If the Nats and Padres have an agreement on Scherzer and are just waiting on his waiving the NTC, what's the holdup? Isn't that what he wanted, to go to the West Coast?

Could be he has to show up and sign some papers, could be someone just leaked a fake deal to drum up urgency.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Just looking at Berrios’ stats, career 4.08 ERA 4.01 FIP 9.1 bWAR in 781 innings. Sort of a mid rotation guy, thought he was better than that.

Was a huge prospect years ago.

Yeah, and a bit over-rated now.

You can only lean on your prospect status for so long...

Edit: similar career numbers to Zach Davies

The guy has been a 3-3.5 win pitcher consistently. That is incredibly valuable.

Berrios career numbers are weighed down by his call up season in 2016, with an 8.02 ERA in 58 IP.

Since his first full season in 2017 through this year he's at...

723 IP (10th) | 85 ERA- (29th) | 88 FIP- (30th) | 14.4 rWAR (19th) | 13.5 fWAR (18th)

That looks like a solid number two to me. For comparison, here are Davies & Jon Gray over the same time frame...

595 IP (30th) | 90 ERA- (44th) | 102 FIP- (69th) | 10.1 rWAR (39th) | 6.9 fWAR (62nd)

569 IP (40th) | 90 ERA- (44th) | 89 FIP- (34th) | 10.7 rWAR (38th) | 10.6 fWAR (31st)

Personally I'd prefer Gray since the cost should presumably be lower as he's a notch below Berrios & a pending FA, plus the FIP- is almost identical so getting Gray out of Colorado & in front of our defense could give him a nice boost on the run prevention side.

BREAKING: The Los Angeles Dodgers are making significant progress on a deal that would send them star right-hander Max Scherzer and star shortstop Trea Turner from the Washington Nationals for a prospect-laden return, sources tell ESPN.

Berrios’s FIP number is skewed by his rookie season. All other seasons except one have him below 4, some pretty significantly.

What FIP calculation? B Ref shows his lowest as this year at 3.56. The lowest before (and most seasons were close to it too) 3.84. That isn’t significant to me.

As frustrating as this is, I wonder how Padre fans feel, having thought they had him.

I love it. Welcome to reality in MLB. Good luck trying to outdo the big boys at the deadline. Time to follow the Rays’ strategy like the rest of the small markets.
