Hummel got the #1 spot because he's emerged strong after missing time. 2019 was clearly not a fluke, he's become a plate discipline freak of nature. I know Tellez hit two homers last night (as of this post's writing), but Cooper Hummel warrants a shot, and he'd be a more stable solution at first base.

He's a backup at AAA. Never played an inning of 1B before a couple days ago, but OK. You do you.

This is why I've stopped participating in these things.

Based on all of the prior results, one outlier creates conversation but ultimately does not move the needle much at all. The aggregate rankings come out looking very rational and normally as insightful as anything the various media services put out. Your input and contribution would certainly be welcomed.

I kind of like Cooper Hummel and think he will have a decent career in the majors as he gets on base and is a switch hitter. Would like to see how he is defensively though, always wondered why he was taken off of catcher and now suddenly starts playing some there again and 1B also. The Brewers seem to get a fair amount out of some of their older prospects over the years that don't get much attention, bullpen would be in a bad spot without Cousins or Sanchez right now. Barker is another guy easy to root for.

Junior Guerra was another one in the past. Wasn't Mike Fiers also "old" for a prospect?

I don't follow like in years past so not going to make a list. Just wanted to say, mlb prospectus doesnt have Joe Gray a 2nd rd selection 3? Years ago in Milw top 30. Yet they throw a few other guys drafted before him who have 0 stats to their to be ranked ahead of him. Just bizarre and I wonder just how far he climbs in their next updated rankings. I mean jeesh Tyrone Taylor was a 2nd rd pick who was top 3 on the Brewers prospect around similar stage while no production made it seem too high. They basically gave up on Gray after 2years.

Here's my list with some brief commentary:

* Note: Edited to remove Hummel (#14), Payton Henry (#31), and Reese Olson (#40)

1. Garrett Mitchell - Appears to have a chip on his shoulder. Killed ST and A+. Might be the steal of the 2020 draft, but needs to develop power.

2. Hedbert Perez - Hard to believe he's only 18. I should have him at #1, but he's only 5' 10" and is really young.

3. Ethan Small - You believe or you dont. Overshadowed because he doesn't throw gas. I think he's a mid-rotation starter or elite reliever.

4. Mario Feliciano - I may be a bit bullish on Mario. But, a catcher who can hit? Maybe?

5. Joe Gray - Physical specimen with power. High ceiling.

6. Sal Frelick - Hated the pick. Reminds me of Cole Calhoun with less power. Needs to be an OBP machine to be an everyday player. Might move through the system fast.

7. Brice Turang - Unless he develops power he's Alcides Escobar/Orlando Arcia part 3. I'm only putting him here because he's young.

8. Dylan File - I'm higher on File than most.

9. Freddy Zamora - Doesn't get enough attention. He's my #1 sleeper on this list.

10. Tyler Black - I was a big fan of this pick. I think he could move through the system fast.

11. Aaron Ashby - My opinion of him was shattered by his debut. Tough to come back from.

12. Antoine Kelly - High ceiling. Big lefty who throws gas. Could be ranked about#3 or #50.

13. Alex Binelas - Fingers crossed the Brewers have a 3b prospect.

14. Russell Smith - Another one who could move through the system quickly.

15. Jake Cousins - Big fastball and nasty slider.

__________________________

16. Jeferson Quero - Likely to be in my top 10 next year. Could be now. I just want to see more.

Notes:

1. I held off posting until after the trade deadline, but I legitimately had Olson, Henry and Hummel 18-19-20

2. Both the strength and weakness of the system is that there doesn't seem to be much difference between 20 and 50

1. Garrett Mitchell: Hopefully can get back soon

2. Brice Turang: Pretty young for level. Not shining, but not overwhelmed

3. Sal Frelick: Thought this was a pretty solid pick

4. Ethan Small: Drop in K’s at AAA a bit of a concern

5. Aaron Ashby: Needs to hone the command

6. Hedbert Perez: So far, so good, but still far away

7. Mario Feliciano: Lost season, but still a top-10 talent

8. Joe Gray Jr.: Seems to have adjusted to High-A

9. Antoine Kelly: Six slots too low or 20 slots too high depending on if he can get all the way back

10. Tyler Black: Sounds like he can hit

11. Jeferson Quero: Living up to the hype so far

12. Eduardo Garcia: Was hoping he’d force his way up to Carolina

13. Jake Cousins: Too good thus far to place much lower

14. Korry Howell: Assuming the defense is solid, versatility is a plus

15. Zavier Warren: Biggest question is still position

16. Felix Valerio: Love the walk to strikeout rate

17. Freddy Zamora: Giving him slight pass with injury then COVID season, but bat must improve

18. Dylan File: One of many lost seasons for Brewers pitching prospects

19. Jheremy Vargas: One of the top performers in Arizona thus far

20. David Hamilton: I’ll admit, no clue where to rank him

21. Tristen Lutz: Not ready to give up on him entirely

22. Justin Topa: Still think he can be a good bullpen piece next year

23. Abner Uribe: Command must improve, but 103 …

24. Hendry Mendez: Perhaps overreaction, but one K in first 40 plate appearances with pop

25. Evan Reifert: Fangraphs writeup and recent success have me optimistic

26. Max Lazar

This was a lot tougher than I thought it would be!

1. Garrett Mitchell- MLB All Star Talent

8. Jeferson Quero- I thought about #5

13. Mario Feliciano- MLB back up?

14. Tyler Black- Fast riser (aka Joe Gray, Jr.)

15. Korry Howell- Utility player?

16. Freddy Zamora- Tough season, could be a fast riser in 2022

19. Alex Binelas- Possible 3B depth down the road

20. Jackson Chourio- Big bat tool

Decided to leave off the MLB relievers who will be losing eligibility shortly to open up a few more spots.

Also pretty exciting that some of the International kids are starting to trickle over stateside. After getting very little out of Latin America for so long due mostly to minimal investment, it's encouraging to see some early glimmers from Stearns & company's increased efforts starting to shine through.

1) Mitchell – would have preferred a better start to AA but hopefully just a blip

2) Small – When he was on, he was on. Not sure how much of the goofy numbers are just the Brewers making him work on his secondary offerings

3) Frelick – I still don’t know why people like big league comps on draft day. Statistical comps never look alike. Every player is unique, and this one seems promising.

4) Ashby – Seems like he still needs alittle more finishing

5) Justin Bullock – K:BB ratio was intriguing before the injury. Being promoted 2 levels in a season says something.

6) Joe Gray Jr. – hitting the snot out of the ball but question how he will handle advanced pitching and making adjustments

7) J Quero – Checks boxes so far

8) Hedbert Perez – Would prefer better plate numbers but he is already off to a better start than the last time we saw this kind of hype (Lara)

9) Antoine Kelly – Unfortunately 1 lost year is 2 lost years.

10) David Hamilton – Enough of an idea at the plate and a carrying tool. The most likely to be a regular SS IMO

11) Zavier Warren – Probably time to move him up

12) Feliciano – Lost developmental year hurts. Losing hope that he will do more than clear the low bar set for catching offensively

13) Howell – Numbers have dropped since the hot start but exciting tools.

14) Turang – Walk rate is way down, not seeing enough offense to be a utility player or a low end regular. Maybe there is some iteration that works.

15) Black – The small school thing has me less optimistic. Maybe Im just weary of a Canadian who isn’t good enough to be a hockey player.

16) Zamora – Lots of rust, not sure he can shake it all off

17) Cousins – He is currently a dominant reliever and no reason why that can’t continue but relievers are fickle

18) Felix Valerio – Walking more than striking out makes him interesting but a long way to go

19) Max Lazar – Health would be good here

20) Eduardo Garcia – Start to rookie ball is kind of meh after an off year

21) Abner Uribe – Throwing hard is better than not throwing hard but doesn’t seem like he know where it goes.

22) Victor Casteneda – May not have much of a ceiling and not young for the level but keeping that healthy K:BB will keep him moving up

23) Dylan File – Holding his 40 man spot will be interesting

24) Micah Bello – I got nothing to say and that isnt a good thing

25) Weston Wilson – Knocking the snot out of the ball, but utility infielders generally come as NRIs. Will probably get to the bigs at some point but hard time imagining him as a regular

01. OF-Garrett Mitchell (02) He will figure it out at AA, he is learning not everything falls in for a hit at AA like it does in college and A+ ball.

02. LHP-Aaron Ashby (05) If he was in a system I didn't trust in developing pitching he would be a couple spots lower. The stuff is just too good and the Brewers track record lately gives me confidence.

03. LHP-Ethan Small (03) Right now really just a two pitch guy, I think it is going to be hard to add a slider with the way his extension and release is currently constructed.

04. SS-Brice Turang (01) I still think he can add strength to his frame to bump that SLG/ISO up to the mid teens.

05. C-Mario Feliciano (04) Too bad he can't stay healthy. If you include the COVID season it really is like he has missed 2.5 seasons of development, which is a big deal when you are a catcher. I believe in the bat and I believe the Brewers development staff at developing catchers.

06. C-Jeferson Quero (10) Wish I could watch full game footage, if he keeps it up we are talking about a top 100 guy. Zero passed balls so far with a modern approach at the plate

07. OF-Sal Frelick - Not an overly appealing toolsy pick that everyone wanted, but I do think he taps into a little bit of more power than expected. Calling him a try hard slap hitter is pretty unfair.

08. 2B-Tyler Black - Watched him vs. Vandy and he was the best hitter on both teams. I don't know how much range he will have at 2B so the bat is really going to have to carry him.

09. OF-Hedbert Perez (07) Strikeouts a concern for me, does he profile as more of a corner outfielder only? I think that is why I am not as bullish as most.

10. LHP-Antoine Kelly (06) It is too bad he had TOS. One of those guys who could shoot up the list or completely fall off a year from now.

Tons of movement which is expected after having a year off, probably would have had Reese Olson in the 16-20 range.

1) Garrett Mitchell, Potential 5 tool threat his timeline should make him the heir to Cain

2) Brice Turang, should be a solid top of order SS/2B could still develop some power

3) Ethan Small, hard to argue the stats could be a perfect complement to our big 3.

4) Aaron Ashby, the stuff is awesome, if he can refine the control he can be a beast

5) Sal Frelick, kind of reminds me of Mitchell with less power potential,

6) Joe Gray, Kind of reminds me a bit Trent Grisham

7) Antione Kelly, high end stuff is hard come by

8) Hedbert Perez, Should be higher based on perceived talent but has to do something 1st

9) Jeferson Quero, See #8

10)Eduardo Garcia, See #8

11) Zavier Warren, extremely intriguing if he can stay at catcher.

12) Mario Feliciano, I will bump him up quickly to 6 if he can finish strong.

13) Tyler Black, another prospect who would rise quickly with a little success

14) David Hamilton, Speed plays, recently called to AA

15) Korry Howell, has lots of interesting tools

16) Jackson Chourio, see #8

17) Luis Medina, see #8

18) Jesus Parra, see #8

19) Alex Binelas, Wisconsin born power

20) Russell Smith 6'9" with exceptional control is a great start

21) Freddy Zamora, I am not really big on him Arcia upside doesn't excite me

22) Tristen Lutz, still only 22 but disappointing year

23) Hayden Cantrelle, .179 average with .374 obp, intrigued and concerned

24) Carlos Rodriguez, more walks less avg., still no power

25) Abner Uribe, big stuff/bullpen reduces prospect appeal

26) Thomas Dillard, good power but where does he play

27) Felix Valerio, hitting over .300 in A ball at 20

28) Justin Bullock, not sure on stuff but some upside

29) Cam Robinson, pretty close to Uribe not quite the stuff

30) Max Lazar, I am not giving up on him, still upside enough

Thanks for posting a list & welcome to the board.

Also a huge +1 to him for using the word "complement" rather than "compliment" when comparing one player to an existing player.

Just to give some context to my list, I usually watch at least 4 or 5 minor league games a week from our system, but watch specific players a lot more often. I actually have a running spreadsheet of prospects that I update with notes and such as I watch games. For the rookie leagues, since the games aren't broadcasted, I have some filters setup on Fangraphs with stats that I find valuable in order to try to find guys that are worth paying attention to, as well as paying attention to who gets aggressive assignments from the organization and watching any video I can. Of course, I also factor in the scouting reports from sites like Fangraphs, MLB Pipeline, Prospects Live and Baseball America, etc, especially for those rookie league players. That said, I'm not claiming to be an expert at all, this is just something I enjoy doing :)

This time around, I ended up with 149 players that I found to be worth paying some attention to (35 or higher OFP). They're grouped below in tiers:

Before the list, here is where I had the recently traded players slotting in before they were traded:

37 Bowden Francis RHP (45 OFP) -- Traded with Trevor Richards to TOR for Rowdy Tellez

24 Cooper Hummel UTIL (45 OFP) -- Traded with Alberto Ciprian to ARI for Eduardo Escobar

53 Alberto Ciprian IF (40+ OFP) -- Traded with Cooper Hummel to ARI for Eduardo Escobar

13 Reese Olson RHP (45+ OFP) -- Traded to DET for Daniel Norris

38 Payton Henry C (45 OFP) -- Traded to MIA for john Curtiss

Players in the 35 through 40+ tiers can fluctuate pretty regularly. 40+ and 45 can fluctuate. It's much harder to break into the 45+ tier and higher.
