Guardians? Meh. Whatever.

I like the rock n roll museum tie in - the Rocks would have been great.

So stupid on one hand - I mean as noun - it's a rock. But as a verb - it's brilliant.

Have a little flying V guitar as the logo. Or even a fist pumping in the air. So stupid it would be great.

They could have had so much fun with the rock n roll stuff. Twisted Sister's "I wanna rock". Freaking gold.

And the tie into Charlie Brown's Halloween would have been priceless:

If they didn't want to be so blatant with Cleveland Rocks, there is so much in the rock and roll genre that would have worked.

Cleveland Amp

Cleveland Rollers (all the people who wanted cleveland steamers could have maybe been pleased here.)

Cleveland Beat

Cleveland Fusion (like fusion rock)

Cleveland Air (everyone plays air guitars instead of chop like the braves)

Yes I know some are horrible, but you get the point.

I think the name is fine. It has a local connection to Cleveland and maybe is meaningful to people in NE Ohio. I really like the art deco winged baseball logo. It looks like something from a 1940s cartoon. I like that it has feathers, to still connect back to their historic imagery. Also, their script 'Guardians' connects back, with the '..dians" lettering.

I'm not a fan of their new block letter font. The C and E are visually unappealing to me.

Otherwise, I'm glad that they're moving on. It's hard to be forced into changing your identity after 100+ years, but they seemed to have done so in a way that touches a local identity, isn't offensive, and also has elements that connect to their past.

Oh, I don't know about that. I think plenty of prison guards could be kind of insulted by this.

Speaking of hockey, it can't be long until the Blackhawks change their name.

Not happening as the actual Blackhawks name is of an actual Chief. There really isn't anything controversial about the name either it is literally the name of Chief Black Hawk.

It's better than the Marquette Gold.

yeah but Gold lasted 6 days and Marquette realized the backlash and reversed coarse. Don't the teams run this by focus groups or people that should have the pulse of the city. We don't live there and aren't fans of the teams. Maybe it plays well in Cleveland, but nationally it doesn't seem to be playing well.

I thought Cleveland Rockers would have had a chance. I guess it was a WNBA team for a while so maybe that’s why they didn’t go that route.

My frustration is that it is tied to SUCH a specific thing. They are kind of stuck with some sort of tie-back to art deco styling. Don't get me wrong, I love art deco, but to have that design constraint and then also have the same colors as before... those limitations just seem like a recipe for a meh logo/uniform set.

Maybe in a few years when the name stands on its own as the name of the team, it'll be easier to walk away from that styling. Who knows?

Spiders would have been great, IMHO.

I think they could put the art deco statue guy into scenarios from any era. Like Bernie Brewer started as a ethnic German brewmaster, and now he's just a yellow haired guy with a flag and a slide.

They could create a character out of him, like an unfrozen caveman kind of person, and have him experience new and interesting things tied to promotions, etc.

Anything new is going to draw its share of critics.

One thing I like about the new name is that with the same number of syllables and the “dians” ending it rolls off the tongue just like Indians so it won’t seem like such a dramatic change.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

As the CLE person/ fan on here, I should chime in.

Perfectly fine with Guardians. I disliked 'Spiders' due to history (different franchise, was in the NL, went 20-134 in its final season).

The bridge (& 2 of the 4 statues) are literally a 3 minute walk from the entrance gate located behind home plate.

Pretty sure the Cleveland Wahoos woulda/coulda/shoulda dominated any vote.

EDIT: Cleveland Lobbyists? PCers?

I don't really have a problem with Guardians though.

Good post MadThinker, appreciate you sharing this. As I mentioned earlier, if Cleveland fans like it then it’s fine with me. And actually, I think it has already grown on me since it was initially announced.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I get the reasoning behind it but it's still stupid to me. Spiders would have been a marketing bonanza. Kids would love it because it's spiders. The millennial/gen z type would love it because it's retro and they love everything that's retro. Old people would love it because of the history behind it. Guardians appeals to the people of Cleveland, which I guess is the point, but no one outside of Cleveland gets it and most think it's dumb.
