Brewers Pitching Coaching and Clinics

Remember the old days where it seemed as if we couldn't keep a good pitching coach and pitchers leaving the Brewers found better luck elsewhere? Seems like that tide has turned in a big way. I have to say that I couldn't be more impressed by the organizational turnaround in this area.

It occurred to me when thinking about Gustave and adding a second pitch... "Well, I'm sure our pitching clinic can fix that!" ... on a 28 yo "retread" arm. (Retread = he has arm talent, but bounced around without establishing much at MLB - couldn't think of a better term)

Whether it is the development of Woo, Burnes, and Peralta or small adjustments to BP arms that make them more effective... there is a lot to like about how we are working with pitchers.

Yes, I was thinking about him leaving or Maddux. When Maddux left, there was a perceptible dip (probably due to multiple things, but...). Not so much with DJ. I think they have a better system setup than one individual pitching coach.

Coaches at the major league level do not make or break a pitching staff. They help or hinder at the edges. I often wonder how much of a role things like superior video shooting/editing capabilities, training staff, more detailed scouting reports and such do to help pitchers compared to a pitching coach. Obviously all are important but what percent all the behind the scenes stuff is. It'd be interesting to see if the teams than invest more on than others on that sort of stuff get better results.
There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Yea after the initial struggles after Johnson left I was definitely skeptical on Hook. To my best memory, the biggest things I didn't like was it seemed many guys wouldn't throw secondary pitchers, too many fastballs. But since then he's obviously proven any doubters wrong. Along with just the pitching coach at MLB level, it seems they have an entire organizational structure/plan on pitching that is working very well. At this point we just have to give benefits of the doubt on almost anything.
