2021 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 11-20

Community Moderator
Welp, get Rogers and Holten.

Holten previously said he was offered a number in the high six figures from other teams and turned it down. Said he had a number he gave teams, and nobody met his number so he’s planning on going to Vanderbilt. That being said, the Brewers might actually be able to piece together more than $1 million to offer him.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I really thought when they drafted him in the 11th, especially after saving on some of their earlier picks, that there was a deal in place with Riggio. Guess that either wasn't the case or something broke down. Hopefully they can get the four other high schoolers to sign (Vire, Low, Avina, Rogers).

Losing out on Riggio and Holton doesn’t bother me so much so long as they do manage to fully utilize their bonus money. I would hate to leave cash on the table.
I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Are the rules for NDFA the same as rounds 11-20? There were likely a lot of talented HS and college kids that went I drafted and perhaps some could be offered big money to lure them. Or we just allocate this money towards adding salary at the deadline

Non-drafted free agents can sign for $20k max. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2021-mlb-undrafted-free-agent-tracker-agreements-for-all-30-teams/

Surprised that Mendez has not signed yet. You would think a 28 year old would want to start his career as soon as possible as time is not on his side.

When can we expect the draft picks who have signed to get assigned to a team? I assume they are in Arizona getting into playing shape.

Thank you to the Milwaukee brewers organization for selecting me in the 2021 MLB draft. It was an unforgettable experience. With that being said I can’t wait to get on the mound in a TCU uniform! #gofrogs @kirk_saarloos @TCU_Baseball @Brewers

This is starting to turn into a dud of a draft...

Yeah .... no

After the Avina signing, still leaves roughly $1 million to go over the $125,000 thresholds. Gotta think the Brewers thought they had some initial numbers worked out with Riggio heading into day three of the draft and it fell apart...probably happens more than people realize. Will Rogers is likely the strongest prospect left, but from a financial standpoint the Brewers should be able to meet all of their needs if they want to start pro ball.

Tick-tock, tick-tock: we’re now 8 hours from the 4pm Central Time Sunday signing deadline for MLB draft picks.

Let’s hope 3-4 remaining unsigned players come aboard (e.g. OF Roc Riggio - announced not signing, LHP Caden Vire, 1B/RHP Quinton Low, LHP Hunter Hollan - announced not signing, C Will Rogers - unlikely, LHP Carter Holton - unlikely but still discussing, RHP Samuel Mendez).

Note: Unsigned 19th rounder Holton gave some insight into what kind of bonus he is/was seeking:

Its encouraging that Holton has a number in mind. $1M is steep. That's 2nd / 3rd round money. Is he worth that? Maybe there is still a shot he will sign and his "Will not sign" statement was just a negotiating ploy. It'll be a shame if they don't use up their bonus pool money.

I don't think I've seen that happen, although if I were the Brewers I would be dangling $1M at each of the 3 will not signs

From Jim Callis:

13th-rder Quinton Low signs w/ Brewers for $347,500 ($222,500 counts vs pool). Colorado HS two-way guy, up to 96 mph at RHP, also lefty power potential. Santa Clara recruit.

From Adam McCalvy…

The Brewers signed 16 of their 21 Draft picks before today's deadline passed, plus three undrafted players.

Here are the players who didn't sign:

OF Roc Riggio (11th round)

LHP Hunter Hollan (15th)

C Will Rogers (17th)

LHP Carter Holton (19th)

RHP Samuel Mendez (20th)

Disappointed they couldn’t land one of the big fish. Class is still pretty good but not great. Mendez makes zero sense not signing. I feel like our farm system is in really good shape. Traded almost nothing from the top 30 and a lot of talent in the A levels.
