2021 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 11-20

Here are some articles on Will Rogers. Sounds like he’s a catcher-first, pitcher-second with good pedigree, but appears excited about attending ASU.

Have you seen the girls who go to ASU? I'd be pretty excited about being a baseball player there too.

Only thing better than being an ASU baseball player there is being a professional baseball player down road there in Maryvale ;) He still gets the same girls but with more prestige!

Proud member since 2003 (geez ha I was 14 then)

FORMERLY BrewCrewWS2008 and YoungGeezy don't even remember other names used

He is too young for them they go for the 30+ men there with expensive cars.

Not sure about the other organizations but CLE has been position player heavy in its last few International signing classes. Going pitching heavy in this draft helps to balance that out..

We may be in a similar situation. Gonna have two full Arizona teams combining to cram into Carolina. Would make sense to go college heavy the last two years to get some guys out in front of that wave.

It’s going to be really interesting to see how man high school guys they get to sign. Riggio, in particular, I suspect they chatted about what it would take.

The Riggio story is eerily similar to Scooter Gennett’s situation. Similar profile. Potential second baseman. In Scooter’s case there was talk he was going to Florida State as I recall so we got him like in the 16th.

For the 11th round in particular, as the first round of day three, using a pick likely means teams have had plenty of time to talk to players / representatives and have a good sense of bonus demands. Later in the day as picks are flying by every minute you might get surprises and flyers, but I imagine the Brewers know exactly what Riggio wants to sign, and feel that they at least have a chance to make it work. They almost always have some picks in that range that end up signing over slot and have some chance of being something, even if plenty of them don't pan out. See for example Chad McLanahan who signed for $1.2M in the 11th round (in '16) as a potential power bat with an ASU offer in hand.

This is completely spot on. If he doesn’t sign at this point then something likely went horribly wrong. McClanahan doesn’t get a lot of mention because his career hasn’t taken off so far, but he received the second highest Brewers bonus payout in the 2016 draft behind only Corey Ray. He got more than Lucas Erceg, and significantly more than other earlier round selections such as Mario Feliciano, Braden Webb, Corbin Burnes, Zack Brown, etc. Even the next year, 2017, they signed two players (Max Lazar and Je’Von Ward) from the the 11th and 12th round for $475k each. Other notable post 10th round signing bonuses include 12th rounder Kory Howell ($210k) and 13th rounder Reese Olson ($440k) from the 2018 draft.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Yah, the Riggio pick feels like one where they know their budget and his demands and believe they can make it work. Holten feels like a fall back option if negotiations with Riggio go sour, unless they really went that far under slot. I imagine Moore and Mendez probably sign. If they can split the difference and sign three of the other six that would be solid.

I agree with you both, and I am of the belief that as a result he may be one of the first to sign, as I think they likely had the framework of a deal already in mind when they picked him yesterday.

It’s also been mentioned by the Brewers before, but sometimes these kids really don’t want to go to college. When push comes to shove, they are more motivated to sign during the summer than they anticipated before the draft due to the pressure of not getting re-drafted until age 21.

It's kind of interesting to look back at the Brewers' 2018 draft rounds 11-20 [let me cheat and include 21, because of who was there]. Davis Daniel was a draft-eligible sophomore who did not sign in the end [perhaps this should temper our Riggio dreams a bit], and was taken by the Angels the following year...he put up some nice starts in A+ this season and was recently promoted to AA. Howell and Olson I believe signed for well over slot, and both have developed to the point that they get mentioned in Brewers prospects lists. Cabell developed some big time power at FSU and was just drafted in the middle rounds by St Louis. Nick Trogrlic-Iverson transferred to Gonzaga and signed with the Cardinals as well after the 2000 shortened season and draft. Barger is with the Braves now via NC State. Hajjar went to Michigan and had a great career, just went 61st overall to the Twins. Peyton Zabel is a story all his own, sadly not for baseball reasons.

So while I don't really know much about any of these guys, it's likely that we'll hear more about many of them in the years to come.

11 (335). Davis Daniel, RHP, Auburn WILL NOT SIGN

12 (365). Korry Howell, SS, Kirkwood CC (IA)

13 (395). Reese Olson, RHP, North Hall HS

14 (425). Elijah Cabell, OF, TNXL Academy (FL) WILL NOT SIGN

15 (455). Nick Trogrlic-Iverson, RHP, Central Arizona College WILL NOT SIGN

16 (485). Alec Barger, RHP, Polk State College (FL) WILL NOT SIGN

17 (515). Clayton Andrews, LHP, Cal State Long Beach

18 (545). Scotty Sunitsch, LHP, Washington State

19 (575). Peyton Zabel, RHP, T.F. Riggs HS (SD) WILL NOT SIGN

20 (605). Joey Matulovich, RHP, California

21 (635). Steve Hajjar, LHP, Central Catholic HS (MA) WILL NOT SIGN

Davis Daniel was an interesting case in that the Brewers drafted him without seemingly having any discussion with the family or advisor prior to the pick.

Here’s his dad’s quote from the day following that draft:

“We were surprised that the Brewers decided to spend an 11th round draft pick on Davis but we weren’t surprised it was the Brewers because they had paid attention to him coming out of high school,” Daniel’s father Rusty said Wednesday evening.

Given Riggio’s experience playing for the Brewers scout team I’ll be sort of shocked if they didn’t work the handshake financials out ahead of time before making that pick. The pre-selection discussions between teams and advisers/family for players taken in the 11th round are the more typical operating procedure.

A quick note on Vire. He was recruited to ASU under Tracy Smith, who has since been fired, and the now departed Jason Kelly. Kelly was credited with a ton of success on the pitching side from the players. A number of guys expressed openly their intent to transfer if he were not retained under now coach, Willie Bloomquist. Kelly was made an offer, but left for LSU, so it stands to reason that a guy like Vire, who stated he chose ASU partially in part to Kelly being there, may be more interested in turning pro now.

Rogers could sign, but it would take a pretty big offer I think. He has the pedigree to be a top-5 round pick, if things work out in college.

My hope is they get everyone signed other than Rogers and Holten. Realistic? I don't really know, but that's what I'm hoping for.

I think that request is pretty realistic. I’d even sacrifice a few of the lower HS guys to get at Rogers.

Holten seems like the only lost cause.

It all kind of boils down to how much to pay a 2nd round college senior. If we can get a huuuge savings on his $1.44 mil draft slot, anything is possible.
