2021-07-11: Reds (Castillo) at Brewers (Woodruff) [Brewers lose, 3-1 -- Crew hits a speed bump heading into the All Star Break]

Eye Black
I for one am not fawning over the Reds. I just like their offense better, the starting pitching is pretty similar in my mind, and our bullpen is better. I also think the bullpen is the easier fix at the deadline of the three components.

Just an observation, but by the way so many here fawn over the Reds, you'd think this is a Reds fan site. It isn't new, either. Been that way for years.

Yeah...Cincy is a lot better within these threads then they are on paper or in person.

Winning the division isn't easy, maybe they are providing a good reality check to fans that this team isn't going to run away with the division, but man do people act like they are some world beaters while forgetting that we have a pretty good squad over here too

I think the Reds are slightly better. Our rotation is better but not by much. Their lineup is better but not by much. Our pen and defense are probably better. I'm not fawning over them, but it seems pretty clear to me.

I think you mean "Our pen and defense are light years better"

Up to 39 pitches through 2 innings. Keep working him and get to the pen earlier in the game.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Yeah, and probably partially a function of them winning 5 of the last 6 against the Crew. I think they have a more balanced roster. Is it better? Probably depends on how you feel about Wong and Taylor and Cain. And is Yelich this guy this year? Or something with a bit more SLG than he's shown so far.

The Reds bullpen melts down more often than this board...if this fanbase had to follow that it would constantly wonder why it couldn't come up with a decent reliever or two like the Brewers who seem to have no-name relievers come out of their ears and dominate year after year after year...

Yup. Grass is always greener. Like someone said the other day, their pen has looked better lately, but it's a big glaring hole (especially in the 9th inning) in an otherwise solid roster.

To be fair though, the bullpen is one area that is relatively cheap and painless to improve at the trade deadline. I'd expect the Reds to add arms. I'd expect we'll add an arm or two. I think the ease of adding pen arms is probably why Stearns has been willing to part with numerous productive relievers in trades already this year, knowing he'll add more.

It’s looking like the Euro Cup soccer final is going to be more entertaining than this game.

Cool, let us know how it goes.

In two minutes there has been more scoring than the Brewers manage in an hour.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

And the Brewers go out with a whimper. Fire Haines and just promote the damn assistant at this point. A new voice definitely cannot hurt as this team is already bottom 5 in literally every major offensive category.

What are they going to do have the new guy change his uniform every inning and bat 9 times a game? Coaches coach, but the players are the ones swinging the bat and have played thousands of games before getting to the major leagues. Short of swinging for them what’s a hitting coach going to improve?

Do you release all the players or fire the coach? answer me that.

Why do you have to do anything? They’re professionals that have reached the highest level of competition in the world. Symbolic moves to “shake them up” don’t really work over the course of 162 games.

If they fail to hold on to the Division when it’s definitely there’s for the taking; I imagine there will be changes in both coaching and personnel in 2022.

For as awful as the stats are for the Reds bullpen, it doesn’t seem to translate into very many late lost leads. The Reds significantly improve their W-L record in the late innings. Maybe they score enough to cover the runs given up, or a lot of the runs off the bullpen come in lopsided games or when they just reduce leads or increase deficits.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

You did everything but answer my question with that swerve of an answer. They have consistently been bad under Haines, this isn't a new development or something sudden. What fear do you have of moving on from him? That they get worse? It's not really possible. A lot of new players have joined this team, the weakness remains the same.

It’s a good observation. It’s weird to say the least.

Some people fawn over the reds, others complain about people not being fans in the correct manner. It's like it's some weird collection of people here where everyone has a different opinion or something.
