2021-07-11: Reds (Castillo) at Brewers (Woodruff) [Brewers lose, 3-1 -- Crew hits a speed bump heading into the All Star Break]

Do you believe it’s enough to carry us through the rest of the season and the playoffs? I sure don’t. Scoring one run is awfully hard to win with in the long run.

Yes, this team is good enough to make the playoffs. Right now. The pitching is legit.

Now, advancing in the playoffs is a different story. But this team, as it stands, is a playoff team. There's no reason, other than pessimism, to believe it isn't. Sure, they've fatten up on some bad teams, but they've generally looked fine against decent to good teams for the most part.

Fair enough. I’d feel a lot better if we could somehow improve our 6, 7, and 8 hitters. I realize we can’t do all of them, but improving one would be nice.

Agreed. I think they will, too. I don't know how. But I believe this team knows they are a contender, and will make moves to firm up that stance.

That’s April and may. Reds are a better team than us and they will whip us after the all star break unless we hit the ball. And anyone with a pulse will whip us unless we hit the ball

If you think woodruff peralta burnes and hader are going to damn near perfect like they were in the first half you’re a fool. I mean hader already blowing a bunch of games now. And they just beat woodruff and peralta back to back

This os a huge series after the all star break.

2 game take on a moment in both games. Yesterday CC was gone and whoever was managing at time, PH Hiura vs a RP Tellez could easily face against. SO. Lost a bench bat at a more critical moment in 9th yesterday.

And today, CC did it again. 3 pitches later-K.

Cc has become very poor at timing his moves. Wasting PHs earlier than he should on batters for batters vs pitchers only. The fact Hiura remains on the 26man is alarming when you trade for help and then barely use him. 2PAs as a 1b replacement these last 2 games.

Did you believe we would have 53 wins and a 4-game lead at the all-star break? Don’t be a prisoner to the moment. They had a gross series but they’ve been pretty good lately. They’ll be in the mix in the end. And it will be because of pitching and defense. If guys hit their innings limit, no matter who we trade for offensively, it won’t matter.

They have actually been pretty bad lately starting with the Mets series.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

I think the Reds have a better offense and that's not exactly a controversial opinion. I'll take our pitching. Brewers just need to find ways to score enough runs. We just saw 3 two run games and a one run game, I don't think that's reason to panic. It also felt like every bad break under the sun came our way. It's not like the Reds were out there doing to us what we did to the Cubs a little while back.

At worst we have to take one game in Cincinnati. Just don't get swept, winning 2 would be wonderful and sweeping them would be a huge bonus and great way too start the 2nd half.

Sucky series. Hope we can get some of it back in Cincy and take 2 out of 3, but the bats need to be better.

It's too bad we blew the chance to put some distance between us and the division, but at the end of the day, I think everyone here before the season would have taken being in 1st by 4 games at the AS break.

Hopefully the pitching holds the whole way and some of the guys struggling can reset and have a better second half. It will be interesting to see who we add before the end of the month.

What a mess. what are they 1-7....1-8 against the Reds this year? Can't score and hard to argue against the Reds are the better team right now. Lets see what Brewer management does about it.

Uhhh, 5-8.

5-8 so just 6 games vs them remainder of season then. Maybe the Reds just hit Milw at the right points thus far this season. Offense struggles, Hader has a struggle week, umps create Brewers struggles, Castillo finds his A game as does all Cincy pitching. Having Suarez the Brewer killer come clutch.

Lets see what the break does for the team and maybe best off all is immediately getting to play 3 games right after.

I guess we won’t know for sure until we see what, if any, additions the teams make, but right now it’s hard to argue that the team that won 6 of 7 on the other’s home field isn’t better.

Nice! The Brewers are much better than the Padres and Dodgers using that metric.

No, the question is how good teams are right now, not how they were in April when the Brewers had winning series against the Padres and Dodgers. And I don’t really care how the Brewers compare to them as they aren’t in the same division.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

A few thoughts after attending the game.

1. Garcia was just awful today. Terrible defense in the ninth and even worse at bats.

2. When JBJ is your offensive juggernaut for the game, you know the offense was bad. Five hits and eight LOB. Let that marinate for a while. I left immediately after Castellanos hit the 2 RBI single. Hiura JBJ and a PH were not going to get it done.

3. Saw the replay of the Adames steal attempt on the jumbotron. He was definitely out, and I'm actually amazed there was so much debate about it here.

4. This:

Went to the game today. Total dud to see in person.

I mean, it was a crap show from the first pitch to the end.

Woodruff was off all day, but still only allowed 1 single run through six, but as usual, the offense couldn't do squat.

Leaving games like this just makes you feel really BLAH...

Agreed. This game ended my five game winning steak.

Enough for what? Make the playoffs? Because this team is a division champion if the season ended today.

For all the consternation so far, the pitching/defense approach has worked.

STOP questioning other fans opinions already! Geez... You and others do it constantly.

It's ok to question the validity of this team.

It's ok to feel less than positive about a team who lays an egg against the Reds, our current nemisis.

It's ok to have thoughts that are not like your own.

Right now, on this very day, the Reds are better than us. It is obvious. That could change, and hopefully it will, but just stop being the thought police.

It's great that you only see unicorns and rainbows, but there are legit concerns about this team moving forward, and the series against the Reds has shed light on a lot of them.

This is a first place team today. That's ALL I was saying. Stop trying to put words in my mouth. Question his opinion? I disagree with him. Last I checked, that is allowed. That's it.

My response surely DID NOT warrant this sort of response, from you of all people, a poster I greatly respect.

I realize that you just like to pick arguments, but that is an absurd interpretation of my point. I don’t think even you believe that teams don’t evolve over the course of the season, and that their composition and how they perform in the last few weeks before the All Star break is more predictive of how they will perform in the second half than how they played in April.

Anyone who thinks the Reds haven’t improved significantly, specifically in the pitching department, since the early season has his head in the sand. And the Brewers have seen that improvement.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I just don’t think your point has much behind it. The season is a marathon. There will be good and bad stretches. The Brewers just finished off 33 games in 34 days. Does that factor in at all? Of course it does. The Brewers won 4 more games than the Reds to the all star break but you’ll give no credit to the Brewers for doing so. Just that the Reds had a better, not by much, series days before the all star game. Are the Reds better? Maybe? Maybe they will surpass the Brewers before the end of the season. But you state it as though it’s final and it’s definitely not.

The reds right now are the better hitting team over the Crew and they getting close to the Brewers in Pitching. Yes we’re in first but that means nada I sure hope we can say the same thing after 162 games are played. But Stearns needs to spend the break finding a Legit hitter in to the lineup.
