2021-07-11: Reds (Castillo) at Brewers (Woodruff) [Brewers lose, 3-1 -- Crew hits a speed bump heading into the All Star Break]

Eye Black
It’s only a baseball game. Who here ever thought the Brewers were going to win the World Series anyway.

Well...I certainly hope they do eventually. That's kind of the long-term goal in mind here.

We are seeing that pitching and defense isn’t enough. Hopefully Attanasio and Stearns can find a way to acquire some offense this off-season so we don’t completely waste our window of good starting pitching.

How about getting some offense now so we don't give away this season.

Enough for what? Make the playoffs? Because this team is a division champion if the season ended today.

For all the consternation so far, the pitching/defense approach has worked.

3-1 count, need a bad runner and you drill a low off speed into the ground. Good job Taylor. Perfect example of how stupid some of our hitters are.

Andddd that'll do it. Thanks, Josh.

Can we throw some blame at Avi Garcia's flubbed non-catch too?

Yeah, it's too bad he didn't hit a two run bomb with no one on base in front of him.

Do you believe it’s enough to carry us through the rest of the season and the playoffs? I sure don’t. Scoring one run is awfully hard to win with in the long run.

The funny part is, he tried to on strike one. Again showing how stupid some of these guys are.

At least they're not getting paid Yelich money to be so stupid.

Did you believe we would have 53 wins and a 4-game lead at the all-star break? Don’t be a prisoner to the moment. They had a gross series but they’ve been pretty good lately. They’ll be in the mix in the end. And it will be because of pitching and defense. If guys hit their innings limit, no matter who we trade for offensively, it won’t matter.

Yes, this team is good enough to make the playoffs. Right now. The pitching is legit.

Now, advancing in the playoffs is a different story. But this team, as it stands, is a playoff team. There's no reason, other than pessimism, to believe it isn't. Sure, they've fatten up on some bad teams, but they've generally looked fine against decent to good teams for the most part.

The Reds are the better team anyways.

Except they're not.

I guess we won’t know for sure until we see what, if any, additions the teams make, but right now it’s hard to argue that the team that won 6 of 7 on the other’s home field isn’t better.

Now that they have added Gutierrez and Castillo is back to elite form, they have much better starting pitching than they had in May. A lot of what happened then is irrelevant to what to expect going forward.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Probably the least amount of fun I've ever had watching baseball for 3 days. Ump Show, Hader meltdown, offense disappears again, makes you really appreciate the long winning streak because they don't come around that often. Go Brewers nonetheless.

Brewers didn't get the breaks this series. 4 really close games. I'm not going to overreact to it but in this moment it really sucks. That's why you want the 6 game cushion, so you can weather times like this.

One reason for concern is that haven’t really played any decent to good teams except the Reds and Mets since the beginning of June, and they are 2-8 in those games.

They are. We don’t have the diamondbacks anymore.

We'll see after 162

Yep that’s why you don’t print the t-shirts that say we were up 4 games at all star break

Wait until the schedule evens out some. Reds are a better team and it shows on the field right now. Heck the beat hader twice now. Cripes

Good post. Frustrating series. Not one I wanted to stew on until Friday. But that's baseball, and there's a lot of season left. It is what it is.

Now let's get Wong and Cain back, and hit it closer to full strength next Friday.

Nice! The Brewers are much better than the Padres and Dodgers using that metric.

Fair enough. I’d feel a lot better if we could somehow improve our 6, 7, and 8 hitters. I realize we can’t do all of them, but improving one would be nice.

Correct. Personally my concern isn't high, though. All teams are going to have cold stretches to go with the hot ones. Sucks it was against a team I love to hate, before the All-Star break. Gotta come back ready to rock Friday.
