Brewers acquire Jandel Gustave and Troy Stokes Jr. from Pirates

On 25th June, Brewers traded 17-year-old catcher Samuel Escudero to the Pirates for Jandel Gustave and Troy Stokes Jr.

On 7th July, Brewers selected right-hander Jandel Gustave to the 40-man roster and added him to the big league bullpen.

Gustave was pretty good for the SF Giants in 2019, interesting to see how he performs for the Brewers. Could be another under-rated bullpen pickup by Stearns, like the Strickland pickup.

Kind of strange the Brewers never said they added Gustave as the 27th man as they almost always tweet out 40 man roster moves. In fact there were reporters who initially stated the Brewers declined to use a 27th man.

I think Haudricourt made mention of this as a possibility yesterday before it was announced. Although I think he surmised that it might be to start the 2nd game of the double header:

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

I know it probably has been mentioned but Gustave has some easy velocity. Watched both his outings for Nashville and he was sitting 97-98 with some good arm side run. With a few 99 peppered in there and a even one triple digits at 100. Slider will be the key, if he hones it in, might have a nice add.

The reason the Pirates let Gustave go is because he is a one pitch pitcher and hitters just always sit dead red against him. He can't throw his slider for strikes. Maybe the Brewers can get him to work on a change-up as a secondary pitch.

Krod made an entire career of being on the edge. I think the guy had a good outing and looked to have some good stuff. Hoping he can build off of it and give us innings we are going to desperately need.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

97 with movement and for strikes will play for a last man in the pen. To progress beyond that, he's going to need a second pitch. Only threw a couple of sliders in two innings, and they weren't close to being passable pitches. With how he worked low in the zone, a changeup would be a game-changer for him.

jandel gustave had his contract selected from class aaa nashville. he has one minor league option remaining, but has been outrighted to the minor leagues before.

two new bullpen acquisitions may be activated as soon as tonight. a reminder that jandel gustave has an option.

He's looked good. Very nice insurance to have for the inevitable bullpen injury or two that are bound to happen.
