2021-07-07, Game 1: Brewers (Burnes) at Mets (deGrom) [Brewers lose, 4-3 in 8 innings -- Hader blows save for 1st time this season]

Eye Black
I mean exactly what I said.

A non strikeout pitcher facing the middle of the order with a runner in second and nobody out is not a promising situation.

Congratulations for being right? I still don't understand the need to be blatantly pessimistic but you do you.

I don’t consider it pessimistic to hope to get out of an inning with a tie when the opponent has a runner in second with nobody out and a soft tossing, low strikeout pitcher is on the mound.

I don’t understand the need for the self righteous, self proclaimed “better fans” to get bent out of shape when people vent. But, I guess, you do you.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

So, worst case scenario: Brewers have a 5 game lead going into a 4-game series with the 2nd place Reds. Win tonight, it's 6.

Either way, that's fine, and better than expected. But a 4-3 road trip and a 6-game lead would feel much better.

This just feels like that Pittsburgh series before the break where we lost all 5 games. Hopefully we can at least split the last 4 games before the break and go into the second half of the season with a solid lead.

Why? How is being that kind of a fan even rewarding? I can get negative and pessimistic with the best of them but expecting defeat before things even start going south just feels masochistic.

So, you don’t see the difference between hoping for a tie and expecting defeat?

Why the heck do you care how anyone else expresses himself during a game?

Counsell has gone from innovative to cookie cutter managing.

Yeah I think it’s going to hold him back a bit but probably still gets enough votes for manager of the year. It’ll be a slimmer victory though I bet as more and more see how truly awful he is.

Considering our injuries, offense, and roster churn he was given you look at our record and conclude the manager is 'awful'. The fact they're in the spot they are is basically shocking. Every year they've been above expectations and win more games than they should have, yet we still can't get consensus the manager is good. I know people enjoy complaining and being negative, but calling Counsel an awful manager is just a flat our terrible opinion.

Nah, you blazed right past reasonable and right into fatalistic. Question the move, say you have a really bad feeling about it, that's fair. You straight out declared defeat or at best a continuation of a stalemate that didn't yet exist. If that's not pessimism to you maybe you need a refresher on the definition.

Whatever, it's not my intention to suppress how you express yourself, it rubbed me wrong but it's not like it ruined my day.

Not sure how people think Suter is a low strike out pitcher. The big issue is that the bullpen is like 4-5 deep and 2 were already used. Not sure who people think would really be better.

The way baseball is played these days, a rate of 1 strikeout per inning is relatively low for a relief pitcher. And a runner on second with nobody out is a situation in which a strikeout has much greater value than it does with the bases empty.

So who was the obvious better option that strikes out way more people?

My choice would have been Cousins, but Boxberger does as well and he was mentioned.

Burning Williams to get one out in the 6th rather than letting Burnes finish it as I said I preferred at the time also came back to burn Counsell. Williams would have been the obvious choice for the 8th.

That wasn’t my point. I was expressing an opinion that a runner on second with nobody out and Suter on the mound and the heart of the Mets order coming up was likely to produce a run. So, I was hoping it wouldn’t be worse than that.

I can’t control the fact that my throwaway comment that I was hoping for a tie rubbed some people the wrong way. I guess in the future I have to provide more explanation or stick with the approved complaint of “I have a bad feeling about this”.

My biggest criticism of what Counsell did today was bringing Williams in for one batter in the 6th instead of using Hader for a potential 4 out save. That took one of the pitchers who I would rather have seen in the 8th out of consideration after facing just one batter.

If there was ever a clearer signal from Counsell that he is never, ever, under any circumstances going to use Hader for a 4 out save, this was it. I’m not sure if any other top closers are used this selectively, but I know that the 3 on my fantasy team (Diaz, Barnes, and Presley) are not used this way.
