Link Report for Sunday 6/27

Hummel doesn't really have that much time to impress either at least for a starting role. The 5th OF spot may become open as Taylor becomes more expensive. But Gray, Ward, Ray and others are either just behind or ahead of Hummel. Hummel really has this year and next spring training to impress as Mitchell should end the year in AA which puts him on track to be in AAA at some point next year. That means in 2023 Mitchell is then knocking on the door and if Hummel isn't playing for the Brewers and starting or is the 5th OF he will be more than likely passed by Mitchell for a starting role and will be on the verge of being passed by Gray, Ward and others as the 5th OF.

I don't know that Hummel needs to be a starter; there will definitely be an open spot for a backup corner OF. Cain will be a FA in 2023 and Mitchell is a centerfielder so he will slide into that role. I wouldn't put Ray ahead of Hummel; Ray's value is only as a CF and it says something that Taylor has been called up and not him. Ward is a ways off; after a hot start, he's cooled off.

Barring any acquisitions, in 2022 they'll have Yelich/Cain/Taylor/JBJ, leaving a backup corner OF spot. In 2023 they'll have Yelich/Mitchell/Taylor, leaving two backup roles. Since Taylor can be the backup CF, it could be two corner OF roles.
