Joe Gray cannot be stopped. Another dinger today.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

I know it's been a while, given a death I had in the family, but...

FREE COOPER HUMMEL!!!

Sorry for your loss, clancy.

Cool to see Hummel making a case to be the next Cooooooop, but looks like he's only played LF/DH thus far this year so might be tough to get a shot outside of a Yeli back flare up or maybe for a couple week stretch with AL road games 8/27-29 @ MIN, 9/10-12 @ CLE and 9/14-15 @ DET.

Box: Montgomery (Rays) 6, Biloxi 5, ten innings

Man, this team finds ways to lose when it's close (and when it's not close, too). But this was a tough one. A lot fewer video reports from the two Biloxi news stations these days -- front-runners.

Shuckers had 18 baserunners via H, BB, HBP. They were 5-for-17 with RISP but still stranded 14. Chance to tie in the bottom of the 10th, 2nd and 3rd one out, hard ground ball results in an out. Finding ways to fall.

If Garcia doesn't stick around for 2022, right field is open, either via Yelich moving back or Hummel going there.

Unlikely. Even if Garcia doesn't stick around for 2022 RF is not open for Hummel and since he hasn't played any innings at RF in AAA I don't believe the Brewers think he can handle RF. Taylor is already ahead of Hummel so he would get the first crack at RF in 2022 if no free agent is added. I wouldn't be surprised if he is someone that is claimed in the rule 5 draft but also wouldn't be surprised if he is just another AAAA type either.

Hummel doesn't really have that much time to impress either at least for a starting role. The 5th OF spot may become open as Taylor becomes more expensive. But Gray, Ward, Ray and others are either just behind or ahead of Hummel. Hummel really has this year and next spring training to impress as Mitchell should end the year in AA which puts him on track to be in AAA at some point next year. That means in 2023 Mitchell is then knocking on the door and if Hummel isn't playing for the Brewers and starting or is the 5th OF he will be more than likely passed by Mitchell for a starting role and will be on the verge of being passed by Gray, Ward and others as the 5th OF.

It seems like the Brewers have been treating Hummel like a two-tool player. Even so, though, if they think the bat will play he could be a less expensive filler for Vogelbach’s spot next season. Curious if, with Hiura back in Milwaukee, they try him at first to expand his versatility at positions where arm strength isn’t an issue.

Hummel's got a cannon for an arm. From that 2019 article that boosted him to my vote for #1:

"During Spring Training in 2018, Joe Ayrault — my manager in Carolina the previous year — told me that he wanted to try me in the outfield a little so that I could get more at-bats during the year. Outfield wasn’t totally new to me, I had played a little in college. I was in left field the next day and the first ball that came to me, I hosed a runner at the plate."

If there had been a minor-league season in 2020, I think Hummel would be up, probably in that Vogelbach role, and I think he'd probably have had some time at 1B in AAA.

OK, I was going off of both the left field thing (no real reason to keep him in left if he has a good, and I guess accurate, arm) and an old fangraphs system rundown from early in his career that said he was unlikely to stick behind the plate because of his arm.

He got a runner great but no where in that article does it state he has a good or even a cannon for an arm. I don't see any scouting reports that back up what you are claiming that he has a good arm or even a cannon for an arm. Hosing a player at the plate doesn't really mean much if it was Jonny Estrada running the bases you don't need a strong arm to throw him out at the plate. He was also in LF doing this so I am going to go with the coaches here and say he is a LF and won't see much if any time in RF and that is probably because of his arm is not strong enough to play there.

With him getting very little to no time at 1B I don't believe the Brewers see him as a 1B and thus in the Brewers eyes he is a LF/DH only.

Vogelbach is cheap and will be cheap next year. I’ve believed all off-season that he was kept around with hopes of the DH becoming universally adopted (initially for this year, but now for next). Since he’s been adequate at the bag, that helps both short and long term
