2021 Miscellaneous College Football Thread

If the coaches are making 10 million per year, the players should be making millions per year as well.

If it leads to competitive imbalance, that can be fixed in other ways.

For the record, I have no problem with it. But I think we’re headed toward an ESPN-driven super league with only 30 teams. College Presidents, many of whom pride themselves on inclusiveness, will have their jobs depend on making this exclusive club.

All scholarship Texas Longhorn offensive linemen are getting $50K per year from a booster group. I thought the terms of NIL meant you at least had to film some commercials or sign autographs, but this seems like just a direct cash payment.

What is college football going to look like in 5 years? Wow.

I think this was always happening. It's just out in the open now.

Big-time college football is a joke. Just privatize the whole thing and call it NFL Minor League

I think part of the short sightedness in this is that if there are fewer teams, a lot of boosters used to a 10-2 team going to a nice bowl will find that someone needs to absorb those losses when the remaining super conference teams go head to head. 13 of 14 SEC teams are going to a bowl this year. 84 of 130 BCS teams managed a .500 record, mainly on the back of their non-conference schedules. Won't happen when they have killed off all of the easy non-con matchups. Texas may make more money in the SEC, but will spend it all on coach buyouts every three years when they go 4-8. And ESPN is not paying those dollars to have a featured matchup between Alabama and Wofford.

Easy to dump on the kid, but I'll stick my neck out and say that Mertz had some really good improvement this year. Slower than I would've liked, but he is still developing.

Early in the season, he couldn't complete a sideline fade to save his life (basically only over the middle and wide open dumps to the sidelines). He also looked like a shell-shocked puppy if there was a pass-rusher within 10 feet.

Over the second half of the season, he was looking much more comfortable completing passes to WR outside the numbers. And while, pressure certainly does still bother him, he looks a bit more calm and reacted much better than the first half of the year.

Mertz has work to do yet, but I think next year or his senior year, he could be the best QB in the B10.

Yes, that was a cheap shot on my part. I agree that Mertz did improve over the course of the season. However, QB'ing in the Big 10 would have to reach historic lows for Mertz to grade as the best of the bunch.

at bama, he'd be a Heisman candidate. he'd be throwing to NFL wrs behind an NFL o-line.

And don't forget he'd be in a real offense where the defense doesn't know exactly what's coming every play. It amazes me that people can't wrap their minds about how hard it is to compete with that kind of handicap. The same people who complain about Chryst's laughably predictable offense complain about the QB when the results aren't there.

I just assumed letting college players get paid was partly to get the payouts in the open instead of eventually having to suspend a money-making team like Ohio State and Alabama if/when they got caught paying, and also largely to stave off the possibility of a AAA professional league starting up which could lure kids away from the NCAA.

If the NBA G-League further developed yet the NCAA still wouldn't pay their players, would any top recruit bother with college?

I'll admit my ignorance as to what the BIG10 will have for QBs in the next two years. But my main point was projecting what Mertz looked like at the beginning of the season vs the end. He matured a lot. He started making throws he couldn't make at the beginning of the season. Project that improvement over two more years and yeah...he could be very good. Or kind of like Joel Stave...just plateau and remain a big-armed tease.

Five bowls canceled now. Holiday Bowl, scheduled for later today, canceled due to COVID outbreak in UCLA's program.

Would it be a good thing if Cincinnati won the national championship because of COVID forfeitures? Or would it be a bad thing because then we'd have to listen to Alabama/Michigan/Georgia fans whine about how they would have won it if the games had been played?

NCST's coach getting pretty salty with UCLA, saying they should have let them know 2-3 days ago. I'm sure it sucks and frustrating for everyone involved, but everyone has to be aware that the possibility exists right now this could happen. Casting blame and pointing fingers just isn't a good look (IMO... of course). It's too bad that NCST traveled for no reason or couldn't find a new opponent, but it is what it is.

Any team cancelling a game the day of the game with at least 11 able bodied players should be put on probation.

I share your frustration. This was one of the few bowl games I could have watched on network TV. Both teams were there. Families were there. The refs were there. The broadcast crew was there. The field was painted. Each team was hours from cashing a $3 million check for playing this game and you’re telling me a college team with 85-scholarship players (not including walk-ons) couldn’t field a 22-man football squad? C’mon.

Due to transfers/injuries/H&S protocols, UCLA didn't have any/enough defensive linemen. And no, you can't just put an offensive lineman in there. You can't. I know that's what someone is going to suggest, but you can't. A bowl game is supposed to be a reward for a good season. Putting a guy out of position, or even worse, making someone play 2-way because people don't get to watch a bowl game is a punishment. Getting dogged and getting your ass kicked for 3 hours while out of position is a good way for someone to blow an ACL or shred an ankle. As much as it sucks, the right decision was made.

The days of two way players have, sadly, ended.

Where have you gone, Gordie Lockbaum?
