2021 ECF. Bucks vs Hawks: UPDATE - - - BUCKS IN SIX

DuWayne Steurer
I suggested that the 76ers trade Simmons before the season started. I think the 76ers missed their chance to get max value for Simmons in a trade.

I think if Sam Hinkie had been allowed to finish what he started, he would have been jettisoned a while ago.

The should have trusted the process.

Hinkie was pushed out in favor of Bryan Colangelo. Colangelo promptly squandered the treasure trove of assets he was handed in order to trade up and take Markelle Fultz #1 overall. They could very easily have taken Jaysom Tatum (who went #3).

Trae Young only played in one of the regular season matchups. He was 3-17 with 6 turnovers but did have 9 assists. Jrue had 23 points, 7 assists, and just 2 turnovers. That matchup is obviously the key. Jrue's defense should give Young some problems and Jrue's size should cause problems for Young on the other end

The Bucks 3 point defense will be atrocious and Bud will find a way to screw it up. Hawks in 7.

Heat season 3P%: .358

Heat playoff 3P%: .336

Nets season 3P%: .392

Nets playoff 3P%: .353

Hawks season 3P%: .373

Hawks playoff 3P%: .346

Bucks three point defense has been fine in the first two rounds, while the Hawks have shot below their season average from three through the first two rounds.

Hawks might go off for a game or two, but going off for four would be the flipping the script as its played out so far for sure.

The Hawks have no answer for Giannis or Holliday. Both should be able to dominate. I believe if they just get it into Lopez 10-12 time a game, again the Hawks have no one to match up with his size. When the drop and double, just kick it out and get the three. Really simple game plan.

Bucks would have to have multiple guys excessively blow the entire series. Like Middleton/Holiday both just flat out suck. Thankfully Holiday will probably not be as bad as he was against the Nets. Anything could happen though. If the Bucks drop one of the first two games they then have to go on the road. Then you could certainly see the possibility of splitting those. Suddenly you are down to a 3 game series.

Even if the series goes terribly I am guessing the Bucks would still win it. If Atlanta were to win I am guessing they would need to win one of the first two games and then win on the road in a Game 7...I just can't see them going into Milwaukee and winning multiple times. We had to sweat out a series win against the Nets because one player turned on god-mode, thankfully the Hawks don't have that kind of player.

Hawks don't really shoot that many threes. 19th in the league in three point attempts per field goal attempt. And their big guys don't shoot any/few so Lopez and Giannis can just park it in the lane. They lead the league in free throw attempts per FGA though.

EDIT: I should note that I have no idea how the Hawks trended as the season went on. They might have been last in the league in three point attempts per FGA at one point and then shot up to 19th. I do know they won 35 of their last 50 but I have no idea statistically what changed.

I feel like this isn't getting said enough. Instead of " the bucks beat the nets without kyrie and a wounded harden" how about " the bucks beat the nets despite Durant putting on one of the greatest playoff performances of this generation"?

I think the fact that the series went to 7 games is sort of blocking out the reality that the Bucks went 4-1 in the final 5 games and the one they lost was Durant putting on one of the best performances of all time in Game 5. Then he did it again in Game 7 and they still lost.

What's more, the Bucks had found something right before Kyrie went down. They won ugly in Game 3 and had a run going in Game 4 with a lead when he got hurt. I'm not saying the Bucks win the series if Kyrie stays healthy, but the narrative that they won because Kyrie got hurt is bit too hard of a swing in the other direction for me. I think it's fairly likely we would have had a Game 7 even if he hadn't been hurt.

The Bucks certainly benefitted due to the injuries and they probably don't win the series if that doesn't happen. That being said it is a part of the game and certainly a defining characteristic of that Nets team. Not like they suddenly ran into tragic injuries, an injury prone team got some injuries. Always ways you can spin it to be "why we helped ourselves win" or "why the other team handed us the win".

The Bucks certainly flipped a switched internally, for the better, in Game 3. The first two games they looked confused and unprepared. Come Game 3 things slowly got better as the series went on.

I never heard anyone mention this, but I think it is entirely possible that the Bucks were just a bit rusty after having a week off. Sure, as the series wore on it ended up benefiting them, but it wasn't exactly shocking that they started out a little flat.

Game 2 was a joke, you can throw that right out. But the Bucks shot far better toward the end of the series than the beginning. Do I think they'd have won the series without Kyrie's injury? No, I don't, but it looked like it had a good chance of going seven games a few seconds before he got hurt.

If I’m Giannis, I boycott any sort of ESPN interview until they issue an apology for the comments made about the city of Milwaukee. Or any city for that matter. It’s just so uncalled for and it’s no wonder no one watches that trash network anymore. A bunch of buffoons.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I thought the comments were pretty douchey, but when it comes to other large cities with pro teams....Milwaukee does kind of suck.

I just thought it was strange they decided to go dump on Milwaukee/Phoenix. Phoenix is nice unless they are hung up on the weather aspect. I don't recall them dumping on Cleveland when LeBron was taking them to the finals. I get they are LA/New York people and Milwaukee is a trash can compared to those massive cities...but jeez. Probably has more to do with them being mad the large market teams with the flashy big time players are not making it to the finals for them.

There was also a guy absolutely ripping on the Bucks during the telecast that had the draft lottery. One guy basically said the only reason Milwaukee won was because of the Nets injuries and the Bucks defensive game plan was trash. One of the other guys did come in and defend the Bucks and praised their defensive plan against Durant...saying Lopez defended him better than just about anyone has.

I've usually found that when someone says a large city sucks, it's actually that person that sucks and not the city. It's a silly concept in itself. How can an entire city suck? Much less one on a lake with some pretty nice restaurants, pro sports and attractions, and without the logjam of a truly giant city. I don't live in Milwaukee but I have nothing but good things to say about the 5 years I was there. Sure it had problems, my car was broken in to and what not, but those things are run of the mill for major metros.

People that say Milwaukee sucks invariably have never been there or judge cities solely by how late you can stay in a club.

I think this is VERY accurate. There are a lot of people who have negative thoughts about Milwaukee because of some of the limitations it had decades ago, and they're basing their opinions on those outdated opinions without having actually been here.

It is all relative. Obviously someone in sports or on ESPN is comparing it to other cities with pro sports because that is what they experience on a daily basis. They aren't comparing Milwaukee to Birmingham or Greensboro. Then you consider the fact they all live in LA or New York...then yah, small market Milwaukee in the midwest is probably comical to them.

Many people in Milwaukee probably think LA is a dump and you couldn't pay them to live there. I hate Chicago and I am sure many people think it is the most glamorous place on earth.

I actually thought this was worse than the usual ribbing. They really went on about this for quite a while with basically each person chiming in on why Milwaukee is awful. I haven't watched those shows in about 15 years but it just smacks of smugness. I hope they do come and visit the Deer District but they don't have the guts. I'd love if this took off and there were Terrible City shirts or something.
