Pittsburgh Trip

stoutdude04
Looking at heading to Pitt for the series at the end of July. Anyone have recommendations for seats(pretty sure all 3 games are night games, so sun shouldn't be a huge issue)? Places to go with the lady? Wont have a car, so would be looking at places within walking or uber. No real plans set in stone and just looking for a bit of guidance. Thanks!

I don't have much to add, but Rock is ALWAYS commenting on how he loves walking to and from the stadium across the Clemente Bridge, presumably to and from his hotel.

So, there's that!

I took my family out there for an evening game a couple of years ago. We sat on the 1st base side to get some great views of the bridge & downtown. While the sun was setting was incredibly beautiful. We were out out the direct sun earlier than the 3rd base side.

I highly recommend Church Brew Works, should be uber-able. It's a brewery in an old church. Beautiful and good beer and food.

I stayed in the Wyndham right on the point where the rivers converge, and the park there is beautiful and it's an easy walk across the Clemente Bridge to the stadium.

The incline (tram) up the south side of the rivers is a blast and wandering around up above (and down below) is just quite beautiful if you get good weather.

You can kayak on the river next to the baseball stadium. That was pretty fun.

Been about 10 years since I've been out there, but let me tell ya, Uber/Lyft will make it a way more enjoyable visit. The lack of cabs there was BRUTAL

Just came back from Vegas, I can tell you that Lyft/Uber drivers are waaaaay lacking right now. Long, long waits for every Lyft we took, rush/peak or not.

Interesting. Just got back from Nashville and had 0 issues.

Thanks for the tips. Went with the Renaissance for the hotel.

Same. Spend 6 days in NYC. Uber was never more than 2 minutes from us. YMMV.

Depends on the city.

My parents live in a suburb outside Milwaukee. I can always get a car but have to wait 5 - 10 minutes. Last time I was there, Lyft had nothing available unless I went with the SUV so I went with the SUV.

I live in Pittsburgh but born in Milwaukee. I’ve been here now 19 years.

Marriott is a great place to stay. The one across the bridge or the one right next to the stadium.

The street will be blocked off before the game so you can check out some local bars right by the park.

Rivera casino is just a short Uber or 15 min walk away. North side has a great bar area (between PNC and Heinz). If you are younger go to the south side and enjoy about 20 blocks of bars and Tom foolery.

Lots of good bars and restaurants in the cultural/downtown area too.

Church brew works is cool but farther away than most. Still not far Uber but not much around it.

  • 1 month later...

Update for any curious. Flight left Monday at 645am. Thought if we left at 4am to get to the airport at 515 we would be fine. Got to the airport at 535ish. Longest line I have ever seen. They were shoving people through security knowing people had early flights. We had to run to our plane at the end of the terminal and boarded at 6:29. Layover in Detroit and had no issues with either flight out there.

Stayed at the Renaissance and upgraded to get a room overlooking the river and into PNC. Amazing view. Went downtown to get lunch and almost every place was closed or didnt open until 4pm(there were a few places open that we werent going to try for our first meal in 16+ hours, thai, sushi, etc). Found a delicious mexican place after walking for about an hour. Hit up a few local Breweries and called it a night around 10. Walked 6 miles or so.

Tuesday went to the strip district and hit up the touristy area. Got a sammy from Prinati Bros(sp?). Was an interesting mix. I liked it more than the wife. Hit up the history museum for a few hours and then went down towards the park. Grabbed a bite across the street and headed in. Got tickets on the 3rd baseline in the first row. Looked right towards the hotel. Beautiful view, but the seats were kind of sunken below field level, so we moved up 5 or 6 rows and had a great view of the game. Plus, the Crew won. Also, the Iron City beer was quite good. Grabbed a slice after the game and called it a night.

Wednesday went to the strip district again for some breakfast and a little gift shopping for the grandparents and kiddos then walked to the Duqsene(sp?) lift to check that out. Had a view from up top into Heinz field and saw the Steelers training camp...well a sliver of it anyway. Went downtown for dinner where all the places on Monday were closed and found a rooftop bar, which we had been looking for since we landed. Ha. Got tickets in the left field bleachers for Wednesdays game and that was nice as well. Walked around a bit and did not see a bad view in the house. PNC really was nice. Everyone was friendly and I talked up a few locals as well as a few people from Wisconsin. One of the beer vendors grew up in the Sauk area, so we chatted a bit.

Flew out around noon Thursday with the same layover. Another couple of easy flights and back to Wisconsin. Overall the trip was fun. Brewers won, got some beer, and PNC was great. Not sure I'll go back as the city itself was just kinda...meh to me.

I had 1st row ticket on 3rd base side (past the tarp) recently and had same experience. Between the seat being below the field and the net in my face, I couldn't see much. Moved up a few rows and it was much better. For a great stadium it seems like a design flaw for expensive seats.

I'm glad the trip went well (and that the Renaissance is still nice).

Reading your recap reminded me that we also took a duck tour (like the Dells ducks) through downtown Pittsburgh. However, a little Googling shows me that the tour closed down in 2019 and auctioned off its duck boats. Bummer.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.
