Bottom of the 3rd in Zebulon: Joe Gray Jr. homers, then Ernesto Martinez gets plunked on the leg with the 1st pitch of the next AB. Pitcher stares him down and starts jawing at him, Ernesto charges the mound, benches clear and fists start flying. Ernesto and the Down East starting pitcher both got tossed.

Man I would not want to mess with Ernesto. He is a big dude.

I hope Ernesto Martinez gets promoted before the next series, then goes on to become a superstar who’s able to talk about how he got tossed out of his last-ever game in Low-A ball.

Nice to see another excellent outing for Small

LHP Ethan Small turned in his second consecutive dominant outing, allowing just two hits in 5.2 scoreless innings of work. The southpaw issued just two walks and immediately induced a double play after both free passes. The lefty was in line to finish six frames before a rain delay with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning cut his outing short after 75 pitches. Small still pitched a career high 5.2 innings and struck out eight, giving him 19 strikeouts over 10.2 scoreless innings during his two starts this week against Montgomery

Carlos Luna has served notice in his first inning of work in Appleton: 3 batters, 3 strike outs, all swinging. Welcome good sir.

Now that's a pitching line: 3IP, 0 hits, 0 BB, 8 K

Wow. What can anyone tell us about Carlos Luna? Looks like he's already 24 years old, so not a real young guy for High A ball. But, is this someone that has a big arm that might be able to be at least a bullpen arm down the road?

I know nothing about him other than he was the one who got assigned from rookie ball to AAA to start on the last game of the 2019 season after the roster was gutted, and he ended up having a great start. Looks like it was one run in five innings.

After DSL he missed two full years with injury and then obviously last year due to Covid. So think of him as a 21 year old arm.

Jace Peterson, playing first base, was 0-for-3 with three K's, then exited for no apparent reason. Luke Maile came in for him, rather than the only other bench player, Zach Green. But I'm guilty of reading way too much into these box score moves vs. the big picture, in terms of injuries, transactions, etc.

Oh hi, Kodi Medeiros, still yet to make an MLB debut. His 2nd appearance in the series.

Back to the video, on the very next pitch, the Ernesto Martinez HBP and brawl begins. Martinez threw some serious swings and is no doubt headed for suspension. Thank goodness things didn't spread much further, because both benches fully cleared.

I was at the games in Appleton this weekend and Luna wasn't throwing all that hard, was sitting around 90 mph, but his offspeed stuff was nasty. Had some really uncomfortable looking swings against him.

A couple of other things that stood out to me were Garrett Mitchell's speed and David Hamilton's defense. I knew Mitchell was fast, but I was still surprised by how quick he got around the bases. He can fly. Scored from first on a single. He was running on the pitch, but still very impressive.

Hamilton can obviously cover a lot of ground at short but he showed a nice arm too, and had one of the prettiest relay throws I've ever seen to gun a guy at the plate. He took the throw from the outfield and adjusted in mid-air, firing a strike so quick that I don't think his feet even hit the ground before he released the ball. I know I'm supposed to stay impartial when I'm covering games, but I let out an audible 'wow' when he made that play.

Nick Bennett was also back in Appleton on Saturday, so I'm guessing we'll see something about that in the transactions in the next few days.
