Who are the Brewers Rivals?

If the standard is that there can only be a rivalry if fans of both teams consider the other team to be their biggest rival, then the Brewers don’t have a rival. But, I don’t buy that definition.

I think the Cubs are by far the Brewers biggest rival these days, mainly because of the numbers of Cubs fans who come here when the Cubs play and how too many of them behave when they’re here. Plus, starting in 2007, the Brewers and Cubs have been involved in several division races together.

The Cardinals are in a similar position. As a group their fans are less obnoxious when they come here, but the arrogance of the organization and some of their players about “The Cardinal Way” is annoying, and some of the spats with LaRussa, Molina, et al, have added fuel to the rivalry.

I would put it at Cubs 70%, Cardinals 25%, and 5% for teams that may have a special place for smaller segments of the fan base, like people who live farther north and west and have a lot of interaction with fans of the Twins, who the Brewers still play every year.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I think the Cubs fans hate the Cardinals way more than the Brewers. I'd put it at 75/25

I don’t think a single person has argued against that at all. Someone was trying to claim the Cubs don’t care about the Brewers at all. I think that’s pretty much impossible after they got whacked, at home, in front of a large contingency of Brewer fans in a Game 163.

Even the post trying to prove the Cubs fans don’t consider the Brewers a rival because only 7% think the Brewers are their BIGGEST rival. That’s biggest. If 7% think that then I bet a good chunk of the rest still consider the Brewers a big rival.

Good thing someone has already polled Cubs' fans so we can stop with the conjecture. Everyone feel free to interpret these results in whatever way necessary in order to justify your own argument:

This post sums up my thoughts on this exactly (even though I previously said 100% Cubs, but these percentages are really more accurate)

Yes, agreed. I lived on the IL/WI border (working in IL) for 8 years. Cubs/Cardinals are obviously the #1 rival (and ironically hating the Cardinals is the only thing Cubs and Brewers fans agree on). But there have been plenty of ugly games and rival moments. The proximity of Milwaukee and Chicago builds it up too. As does the fact that after the Braves left, many WI people became Cubs fans...

My boss at Motorola wanted to take us to a Cubs game, but couldn't get enough tickets for the team. I convinced him to go to a Milwaukee/Cubs game in Milwaukee instead. I've never been to an uglier game with people throwing things and swearing at each other.

Certainly they are rivals.

Looking at the data they’ve already collected, apparently Cardinals fans listed the Cubs (59.2 points), Reds (10 points), Dodgers (7.1 points) and even the Pirates (4.7 points) as bigger rivals than the Brewers (4.4 points), here’s the Link.

Brewers-Cardinals is listed as the 4th largest unbalanced rivalry in MLB at 46.9 points for Brewers fans and just 4.4 points for Cardinals fan, here’s that Link.

Cubs fans listed the Brewers (9.3 points) as their third biggest rival behind the Cardinals (64.7 points) and White Sox (16.9 points).

Twins fans listed the Yankees as their biggest rival (33 points) and the Yankees fans didn’t list the Twins as a rival at all. Obviously a case of one team not being able to beat the other in the playoffs.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I don't think the Brewers have handed them a truly crushing defeat yet, all the big clashes have gone their way. A big reason why I dislike them so much, at least as much as the Cubs if not slightly more.

The data above and the title of the thread answer the question of whether a team can have more than one rivalry.

The question asked is “Who are the Brewers RIVALS”?, clearly indicating that a team can have more than one rival.

The chart above asks the question “Who is the Cubs BIGGEST Rival?” again indicating that a team can have more than one rival, but some are bigger than others.

My post above reflects that.

The fact that as many as 7% of Cubs fans would say that the Brewers are the Cubs BIGGEST rival, actually surprises me.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Alright cool, it’s been confirmed, the Brewers are a rival.

The Astros though...what year was this? 2005? Kinda strange they would still call the Astros a big rival. The Dodgers, Yankees, and Astros are there based solely on all of baseball hating them. Basically the Cubs consider the Cards/Brewers as rivals.

The Heading for that graph is:

What Team Do Cubs Fans Dislike The Most?

I guessed that the Astros dislike has something to do with the whole cheating scandal that engulfed the Astros before the 2020 season, but maybe I'm wrong...

Poll was in 2020 so you are probably right

The Brewers did go into their place the last week of 2018 with a playoff berth at stake for both teams and swept them.

Who cares what Cubs fans think?

The people running the study.
