Just pretend they're all wearing Dodger's jerseys.

Lauer really has only had one bad outing this year (ATL 3ER in 3IP) and 3 good starts. He is looking more like the pitcher we expected to get back in the trade (i.e. younger Zach Davies) and not the 2020 version he showed last year.

I think the fact that Lauer is a lefty likely makes him more valuable than Davies ever was. He does throw harder than Davies too. I've seen several 94s and perhaps even a 95 or two out of him this year. He's been a pleasant surprise so far no doubt. He, along with Urias's success with the bat lately, are definitely making that Grisham/Davies deal a bit easier to stomach.

Yeah, I didn't necessarily mean he pitched the same as Davies. But more of a #3/4 type SP ceiling. Giving up Davies wasn't too bad in the trade, but seeing Grisham blossom in SD (or continue his success as he did pretty well his last year here) was tough.

I read that Lauer did shorted his pitching arm path to improve the repeatability of his mechanics. I wonder if that had any impact to his velocity too? Seems counter intuitive, but who knows...

Davies was a good pitcher outside of one weird year where he had some phantom injury. He's only 28 now. When he was Eric's age he already had 3 2+bWAR seasons under his belt. Heck he had more WAR last year than Lauer does for his career. I hope Lauer keeps doing what he's doing but I don't think there has ever been a point where Lauer has been more valuable than Davies.

Lauer | 22 IP | 2.45 ERA | 167 ERA+ | 0.5 WAR

Davies | 50 IP | 4.65 ERA | 82 ERA+ | 0.0 WAR

Lauer has been more valuable than Davies so far in 2021.

Lefties inherently have more value that righties ... simply because it is more rare to be able to find competent ones.

DOH! :laughing

Here is another:

Davies: $8,630,000

Lauer: $562,500

It was pretty obvious that part of the trade was to move "backwards" into the cost-controlled years of Lauer over the arbitration/FA years of Davies.

Plus, I didn't dump on Davies as a bad pitcher. I said they had similar ceilings as a #3/4 type SP.

I mean, there are limits to that. Suter isn't more valuable than Burnes for example, regardless of salary or service time.

Oh snap, you got me, Lauer has had a good 22 innings so far this year.

Of course, you are very much correct. But when it comes to two pitchers that offer somewhat similar stuff and perceivable upside, I would imagine that most teams would pick the lefty.

Looking forward to seeing Hiura behind the plate today.

If they let him hit from behind the plate his OBP should be amazing!
