The Bullpen

Just to put the win probability comments in perspective ..

https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=rel&lg=all&qual=0&type=3&season=2021&month=0&season1=2021&ind=0&team=23&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2021-01-01&enddate=2021-12-31

So if they are around +1.6 wpa for the BP and Hader has +2.6 of that, it kind of implies that the rest of the pen is a bit of a negative.

Bullpen and offense are the weak links for sure. Doesn't make us a bad team overall but the BP outside Hader has been pretty mediocre, no sugar coating will change that.

It’s truly amazing how we continue to win games with lousy players. Hats off to Counsell and co.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

It actually is pretty amazing how they manage to win. The offense makes the most out of opportunities this year, bullpen manages to get shelled when they lose and pitch great when they win. They give up way more runs than they score but have one of the best records in the league. It would be a pretty crazy year for most teams but it's pretty standard for a team coached by CC. He absolutely deserves to be considered one of the best imo.

Part hyperbole, part not checking up to date stats. Doesn't at all change my point or the truthfulness of it.

"A" bullpen guys stats (Hader, Williams, Suter, Boxberger)

ERA: 3.06

Hopefully this will be enough to get us through til the playoffs. I also like that CC is letting our starters go a little longer as they are better options than our "B" relievers.

Then for the playoffs, you throw Houser and maybe an outside addition or Ashby which should be enough.

Houser Career Bullpen ERA: 1.89

I hope we pick up a 1st baseman with our limited resources as that should be the biggest benefit to W/L.

BrewCrewBall with a pretty good writeup on Devin Williams' performances so far in 2021:

https://www.brewcrewball.com/2021/6/30/22556902/milwaukee-brewers-devin-williams-has-not-been-the-same-in-2021

Breaks down some of the trends that we're seeing in walks/control of pitches and the potential for lack of effectiveness in the setup role.

Won't surprise many if the Brewers chase another setup bullpen arm at the trade deadline.

I actually feel pretty good about the back end of our bullpen right now. Assuming Ashby will be headed back down shortly, if we could add one more dependable 7th/8th inning guy as insurance for Williams and Boxberger, I would be very pleased.

Tier A

Hader

Williams

Deadline Acquisition

Boxberger

Tier B

Suter

Richards

Cousins

Tier C

Sanchez

Strickland

We can (and have) done a lot worse than Sanchez and Strickland as the last guys in the pen.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Curtiss put on the IL and Perdomo optioned. That would lead to two of Topa, Yardley, Milner, and Lobstein called up for the August 11 game. Then Hader should be available to return on August 12.

With Ashby’s performance and rain-shortened start, he may be available again in a couple of days for another start or relief appearance.
