I am all about this deal now that an arm is coming back, too. DDS is making moves

Yeah, lost in all of this is that in my opinion, Richards and revert to the norm JP are likely to wash for the rest of the year, essentially making the trade Rasmussen for Adames.

I don't give a damn who they gave up...that's not my issue...my issue is...that Stearns is hailed as such a god around here for the moves he makes, and yet, his LACK of moves is what we have gotten offensively the last two years. His whole offensive philosophy now seems to be "let's hope, or If". Sure, if I win the lottery I'll be set for life. This year the whole philosophy was "well if Yelich and Hiura hit like they should". The former MVP is coming back from an injury in which prior he had only played 10 games prior and the other is in the minors already. That is EXACTLY the type of thing you get when that's your strategy. Anyone that didn't see how flawed that philosophy was to begin with is simply a blind homer. I knew how it was going to go right away.

Sure, you can think that those guys will return to form, and that's reasonable to some extent, but the big issue is...not having anything to fall back on if they don't..and that's Stearns's issue. He did NOTHING to hedge on that strategy. So now you have the three best Pitchers you have ever had and you are going to waste them with an offense that can't get out of it's own way.

Tough to add anything profoundly new here, but my hot take is that Adames is an upgrade over Urias, who seems doomed to the utility infielder role that Hernan held for a few years.

Bigger picture, sending away Grisham seemed to be a knee-jerk reaction to his error in the playoff game. A lot of bad things happened that inning...but all people remember is scapegoating Trent for overrunning that ball. Kinda like Leon Durham, Bill Buckner and...to an extent, Steve Bartman in his green jacket and earbuds, taking the foul ball away from Alou at Wrigley.

And that Grisham deal, made in....anger?...is haunting us still. Hell, in 2099, the ghost of Trent Gresham will roam the area in RF where that ball skipped away from him...

Random thoughts.

1. I didn’t see the deal coming but I’m not disappointed. In hindsight, it shouldn’t have been surprising.

2. Stearns got taken to the cleaners on Grisham. It is what is. I’m still a huge Stearns fan. He’s got us as a perpetually relevant franchise with actual expectations.

3. Stearns cut his losses. Urias defensively didn’t look like the answer at shortstop. It’s not just the errors. He just doesn’t look like he’s got good range and feel for a demanding position athletically.

4. I hope Urias starts every time we face a southpaw. Offensively, he’s been streaky but he’s a young guy who could be figuring it out. I hope he can play third capably and be a solid utility guy.

5. I’m a draft and prospect guy. You guys see me posting in both sub-forums. So, I can say fairly that I was always a huge Rasmussen fan. But you can’t get a guy like Adames for nuttin’. We had to give up value.

6. I think Adames is considerably better than a lot of posters are pretending. This is a guy who has a good pedigree and talent. He was a highly regarded prospect who was widely anticipated as he was coming up.

7. As far as I’m concerned, Stearns saw that we are a mess and he’s taking action. He acted decisively rather than sink deeper like he’s in quicksand.

Can we take the Grisham trade back and just do this one instead? Because it's kind of funny that we got a league average hitter who's a decent defender at shortstop for a couple relievers while we had to give up Grisham for Urias.

The Rays always seem to be one step ahead of MLB, so I'm instantly suspicious of any deal they do where they seem to be giving up a lot of value. Perhaps Adames has been operating a secret dogfighting ring.

Decent defender is selling Adames far short, but I think the rest of your take is spot on.

Does Urias at 3B and Adames at SS work?

Absolutely if the Crew is trying to be the next team no-hit. It goes perfect with the current Brewer scenario; score about 2 runs per game and waste another very nice game by a starter.

If that's what it is we traded some upside for an established league average player at his position. I liked Rasmussen but we do better developing pitchers than hitters so it makes sense in this situation to take the safe bet. I can at least see the logic of the trade.

Yeah, I mean to look at it another way, if Urias next two seasons mirrored the first two for Adames exactly, we'd be thrilled with that outcome.

I'm gonna have to let the Grisham thing go as it's just gonna bug the heck out of me for awhile. As owbc points out it's a done, sunk cost and we just have to live with it and move forward.

I seriously doubt that deal was done in anger over one play.

I didn't have a chance to look and I thought there might have been some questions coming up if he could stay at short so I went for the middle ground. Although even if he was below average, it's not like Urias isn't below average either.

Fair enough. I think the key takeaway is that they undoubtedly upgraded SS today both offensively and defensively from Urias and the miscellaneous depth IFs.

Adames has a .293/.364/.500 triple slash away from the Trop and it cost us a position we tend to replace well. I'm not worried about losing two wildcard arms for a SS with control that's flashed a real hit tool at the MLB level (unlike Urias had done prior).

It’s sort of similar to the Yelich acquisition from the standpoint it appeared likely the previous home park had held back some of his production.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

This is a good takeaway from the trade today as well. Adames and Urias getting the ABs is significantly better than Urias and Robertson/Peterson/Reyes.

So we traded one "A" reliever and one "B" reliever to upgrade our shortstop position. I find it interesting that some of the "the bullpen is bad" people are the same saying we overpaid by trading none of our top 3 relievers.

I am guessing we will see some Urias, Adames, Wong and Shaw to end games as that is spectacular defensively.

Huh? I am warming up to the trade, but

1) Feyereisen was definitely one of our top 3 relievers

2) Unless you are trading a couple garbage AAAA arms, which these guys were not, it still hurts your bullpen. We're still going to have to replace two relievers with depth that we don't have.

My thoughts:

1) I am glad Stearns isn’t stuck at watching Urias suck for half a decade like we did with Arcia before making a change.

2) Adames has had decent offensive stats throughout his career. Not eye popping...but nice stats. I also think he has solid defense.

3) I saw someone infer SS don’t tend to hit. It is not the thin no offense position it used to be. The influx of international talent has made it a pretty strong offensive position in all honesty. Lots of .750+ OPS bats at SS these days.

I admit, this is a pretty wacky trade for us, especially while competing. If Adames hits and the pitcher is serviceable I will like this trade a lot. But that is me hoping Adames ends up a .750+ OPS bat. He could be.

Hence the question mark, TF!

It just felt like an emotional overreaction, sending away a blue-chip "nugget" ( to recycle an old Doug Melvin term). Seems like the Padres saw us coming...

We didn't undoubtedly do anything, because we acquired a SS who presently has a 625 OPS and a big whiff rate. Sure, he was better last year, but some young players with holes in their swing peak early. I hope he becomes the guy he was in 19-20, but there's no guarantee of that.

In a lineup full of hitters with poor hit tools, this move doesn't feel like the right move.

I haven't read everything, but I'm surprised at the negativity I saw early, like folks haven't heard of Willy Adames. If you told me we could get Adames before the season, I would have been elated. He had a big time pedigree, was as high as a top 10-20 prospect a couple years back, has put up something like 8 WAR and had a 127 OPS+ as a 24 year old shortstop last year (asterisk for small season if you want). He's controlled for three more years, but will probably start to get quite expensive if he continues to perform well.

I don't think any of that evaluation has changed due to Adames' slow start, even though I like both guys we gave up. (JP in part I probably overrate because he's a western Wisconsin kid like myself.) It does look like they're cutting bait on Urias as a starting SS for the foreseeable future, which is disappointing but probably the right call for a team that still has hope of playoffs in the near future.

I don't think there's even the tiniest chance that Grisham was traded due to one play....the evaluation of players on both sides made it seem like a decent trade. I also think that even though some posters (myself included) have said give it more time, if Stearns had a do-over on that trade, he'd take it in a heartbeat, and this deal confirms that.

I've heard it said that you rarely see prospect for prospect trades because one side often ends up looking really bad and you figure a team knows all the strengths and flaws of their own guys better than anyone can. Urias and Grisham weren't exactly prospects, but the theory might still apply. I want to believe in Urias but recent returns are not promising, and now we've made a significant investment in replacing him at an awkward time.

Hader, Williams and Suter are better in the pen than JP. Not sure why anyone would overrate him for a good 19 innings to start the year.
