Brewers trade Feyereisen, Rasmussen to Rays for SS Willy Adames, RHP Trevor Richards

Well I will say that the Rays roster crunch was the best situation possible for someone to target looking for middle infielders

I've never been more baffled than seeing that people are having a negative reaction to this trade. Adames is 25, has been roughly a 3.0 fWAR/season player over his career, and is under team control for several more years. We got him for two average relievers and Tampa Bay threw in a passable back-end SP with upside.

Not even close in terms of value. Though I do wonder what the plan is now with both Adames and Urias.

He starts arbitration next year, so we do not control him for several more years. He's about to become expensive, which will become a real problem if his production doesn't return.

In essence the real reason your baffled is because your stretching the facts.

Brewers look at Turang as their starting SS in 2023. That was true before this trade and nothings changed.

From Adam McCalvy:

Some highlights from David Stearns’ session:

1. He says this was not a reaction to Luis Urías’ recent defensive issues. The Brewers have been pursuing Willy Adames for months, according to Stearns. I’ll share what he said about that would have meant for the Urías-Arcia jumble.

2. Urías becomes a utility guy, essentially. Stearns made the case they still like him and think he’s a big part of the future, though it appears that means a more limited role.

3. Neither Adames nor Richards will make it to Cincy tonight because they were just informed of the trade. So, Brewers bullpen is short but they feel OK coming off an off day.

4. Daniel Robertson is off the concussion IL tonight.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Turang has less than 50 not great innings above High A in his career. I doubt they view him as anything just yet.

Adames’ career OPS+ is 103. His worst OPS+ season is 97. Arcia’s best is 95 and includes a number of seasons below 70. Do we forget that Arcia could never hit a lick and wasn’t anything spectacular defensively either? Adames is a better hitter and fielder than Arcia and it’s not particularly close.

Urias is better suited for second base anyway. Maybe he’s more comfortable at third. I’m not exactly impressed with Urias this season, but his .320 OBP is promising. We also most likely have the DH coming to the NL next season. There will be plenty of days where Adames, Wong, Urias, and a future third baseman need some time off. Or the inevitable injury.

People thinking we are giving up on Urias or won’t have room for him need to look no further than our OF “depth” where we were using Corey Ray, McKinney, and Taylor when we already had Cain, Yelich, Garcia, and Bradley.

This is also wishful thinking. He is struggling to hit minor league pitching. Granted, he is still young and has very good discipline and contact skills, but lets hope he starts translating that to being a productive hitter.

We all agree this team needs bats and practically it made the most sense to look for an upgrade at 3B/SS.

The Grisham trade is a sunk cost. Gotta move on. We needed help on the left side of the infield and we got it. We sold high on relief pitching which is what many are constantly advocating that we do. And we made deal in May instead of July. I like it.

If we get what we thought Arcia was going to be I'm fine with giving up two middle relievers even if one had potential for more. Granted Adames isn't going to fix our offense on his own. Then again Mike Trout would be hard pressed to do that. Settling for upgrading our bench from Reyes and Robertson types to Urias and getting a better starting shortstop in the process is not a bad way to get marginally better for a team that only needed to be marginally better to realistically get to the playoffs.
There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

It’s a pretty nice upgrade.

They got better at a position they’ve literally had trouble with for a decade. There’s more work to do, but this will help.

Arnold came from Tampa so knows quite a bit about Adames presumably.

I don't get this reaction. Can you not look up his career stats? He's an above average hitter at SS who averages about 20 HR per full season, and he is most likely replacing on the current roster... Pablo Reyes.

It's not like we just blew all of trade capital and this is our big acquisition of the season. We traded two RP with mediocre peripherals who I did not realize were massive fan favorites until about 20 minutes ago.

Adames is a lifetime 103 OPS+ hitter (slightly better than league average). Arcia had a career OPS+ of 72, and never a single season as a league average hitter in the past 5 years at the position. So that would seem to be a huge offensive upgrade at the shortstop position.

3 years is several more years. How is that inaccurate?

It's true that he's going to get more expensive, but it's not like his price is about to skyrocket. He'll probably get what, 3-4M as a first year arby player?

A few would be more accurate, less hyperbolic. His arbitration cost this year isn't a big deal, but if he continues to perform as he has this year, he'll be non-tendered before he would normally reach free agency. If he performs like last year, it's a good move, and we'll keep him through his arbitration years. Hard to project what we'll get, as both are small samples.

I find it hard to believe in him as a good hitter with that whiff rate.

It's Brewcrewin07. He has a long history on here of reacting immediately and negatively to any acquisition that is anything less than a bona-fide superstar.

Sounds like Feyereisen and Rasmussen going back. Wow!

wow, really?

Yeah. I don't know if I like this one. Rasmussen's arm is top notch, and while Feyereisen seems like a dime-a-dozen reliever, he's been really good this year.

I am all about this deal now that an arm is coming back, too. DDS is making moves
