2021-05-06: Brewers (Woodruff) at Phillies (Wheeler) [Brewers lose, 2-0 -- 5th straight loss for the Crew]

Eye Black
Here we are again, 90 pitches through 6 in a tight game. Looks like Woody is lights out from the box score, 7th start of the year and he is not up this inning. Time to stretch him a little further I would think.

That didn't age well, guess I will get back to work

The spring training lineup really takes away from the pitchers duel. Watching Woodruff and Wheeler going back and forth would be a lot more enjoyable if we had any confidence our lineup could eventually string together some hits and scratch one across.

They have the past few games.

Well, that looks like enough if the last three are any indication. Not much choice but to let Woodruff try and get through one more.

One of those stretches, I guess...

What? Over? Did you say 'over'? Nothing is over until we decide it is!

Ha! I hope you're right.

Not having a healthy Yelich and Narvaez to go along with Hiura stinking has killed this team and their offensive output. There is no way around it and not much a GM/manager can do when you have so many big pieces shut down. It's been a pretty big statement that we are even above .500 and in just about every game. If this score stands, losing 4, 1-run games is rough but it shows that they're still competitive even as shorthanded as they have been.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Wheeler is really good so no embarrassment being shut down by him but if you look at this lineup its flat out terrible. I get that Yelich and Narvaez are out but we are way short offensively.

Its alarming to me as I watch guys on other teams at bat and think "wow, he would look really good in our lineup". I mean.... all... the... time. That's not good. LOL

Losing 4 games to them by 1 run will be very frustrating that you couldn't find a way to get at least one of them. Especially when two of them were hugely hurt by errors and then another on the overturn call on the bad slide.

Otoh, they've had several lucky wins this year already so were due some to go the other way

The Brewers have had a lot of issues this week, but JBJ being 1-for-19 with 8 strikeouts since Sunday while hitting 5th/6th certainly hasn’t helped.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

If Woodruff can pitch at least 7 shutout innings the Brewers have a chance today. Otherwise it will be tough. Wheeler has been good lately and should thrive against this lineup.

I was at the game in 2019 in which Woodruff pitched 8 innings against the Phillies and never had a runner on base. The only think keeping him from being perfect was a HR by the backup catcher. I would take an outing like that today, though it might mean a 1-0 loss.

Woodruff failed to do what he had to do to give the Brewers a chance to win. The fact that it wasn’t good enough tells us all we need to know about where this Brewers team is headed.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

How dare he give up a run. He also didn't get any hits.

Things have gone downhill since Shaw made the statement that the team scores just enough to win.

The offense is just not very good. So, so early still, but something needs to change on that side of things. Health will help, but it's got to be more than that. I'm ready to let Cain, Taylor, and Garcia be the regular OF starters with McKinney at 1B. Bradley and Vogelbach can be 2x wk starters and bench bats.

I’m blaming Woodruff for this loss.

I mean even McKinney just isn't very good. He started out red hot and since then has expectedly settled in to his career norms. He'd be a really weak option to start at 1B, though to your point it's not like we have any better choices.

They strike out 10 times or more per game and have no power whatsoever to make up for it. Shame to waste this pitching but thats whats going to happen unless Stearns picks up a few rental bats. We are just fortunate that the division is pretty terrible.
