Just coming back to this game and see that the first two pitchers went 7.2 without striking out a single batter. How is that possible in today's game? I trust Zimmermann retires for the last time after today. Bettinger will have to do an awful lot in the minors before I'd want to see him again.

To strike someone out they either have to swing and miss (look at the box score) or take a pitch as strike 3 (see answer to #1 - when you are knocking the snot out of the ball there's no reason to take a pitch).

As much of a laugher as this one was from the start imagine being the Cubs and Reds who have each given up 12 runs (and counting) with some off their best pitchers on the mound today.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

I'd like to see McKinney take over as the regular 1B against righties once Cain and Yelich are back with Hiura being optioned. But I have no idea who can play there when facing a lefty.

Jedd Gyorko !

After today, Jacob Nottingham. I mean, at this point, why not?

I can't argue with that at least once Pina is back.

It is odd that Nottingham is considered DFA fodder. He has a nice bat for his position and is not a terrible defensive catcher and has some good pop. He's still really young and was near the upper echelon of catching prospects at one time.

There are certainly worse baseball players that had long careers.

That is good. I'm patiently waiting for the Cardinals to cool down. That would make me happy.

Is the dislike toward Hiura because he should be so much better, or is it ostensibly just based on his performance? Because he hasn't been that much worse than a number of others on the team. Especially if you take out the first week or two of the season.

I agree that a minors stint is necessary for him to regain his confidence.

If we could send JBJ to Nashville I'd be all for that. Hiura's secondary stats area abysmal. He's near the bottom or is the worst hitter in MLB at contact on pitches in the strike zone. He isn't juast unlucky he is bad. Needs to get his K% down.

I think it is certainly due to expectations. At least with a guy like Bradley Jr., he brings a reputation as a plus defender. Hiura is a terrible defender anywhere you put him. If his bat is terrible as well, it is very difficult to find a valuable baseball player.

He is young, and he certainly has the ability to turn it around. But after coming up in 2019 and looking like a future superstar, and the way he hit in the minors on his way up, I assumed we had the next offensive force at our fingertips. But after his hot start in 2020 for about the first 20 games, he has been downright terrible.

All fair, it just feels like people focus in on him in particular like he is Yuniesky Betancourt somehow sent back in time and playing on the 1927 Yankees. If/when Hiura gets sent down, the presumptive replacement as the everyday 1B was hitting .173/.259/.308/.567 coming into today's game.

For me it's totally about his performance. I have no delusions that he should be so much better. Just because he was a high draft pick and had a nice start to his career both don't mean that much. He has been a very poor hitter for the past 90 games now and is one of, if not the worst, zone contact player in the majors. Add in that he isn't very good defensively and is now pretty much locked into 1b/dh role, he has to produce offensively to justify his presence on a major league roster.

I think most everyone advocating for sending Hiura down is doing so with the understanding that it would be a temporary gig, until he finds his swing and his plate discipline. Maybe it would only take a few weeks, maybe the rest of the year? Who knows. I think what frustrates fans the most about him is that he has shown that he can be so much better than this.

I've been asking for McKinney to be the 1B since almost the start of the season. That's because I'd be all too glad to see Vogelbach sent packing too as he's just about as worthless as Hiura.

As RRB and simba pointed out his defense is horrible. His defense is so bad if the NL had the DH Hiuira would be the worst defensive DH. I'm fine if the Brewers think he can fix his issues in Milwaukee as long as they put a big blackout on the screen so we don't see him swinging the bat or in the field.
