Your 2021 Carolina Mudcats

Mass Haas
Brewer Fanatic Staff

We will begin to see some formal minor league roster announcements soon. The formal announcement will come directly from the Mudcats, not the Brewers. All four minor league affiliates will likely send out their press releases within an hour or so of each other once the Brewers have given them the official go-ahead to do so.

Opening Night is Tuesday 5/4!

Feel free to link to any formal notices you see here.

Often we learn via farmhand tweets, who has been assigned where, prior to the formal affiliate announcements. We'll link to any of those posts in this thread as they come out.

As you might know, we use the "Your 2021" threads to post and link to feature stories, including audio and video, that are outside the scope of game activity covered in the Daily Link Report.

These threads have become among the most popular for viewing here, and we look forward to kicking them off formally.

Please do not speculate on any player releases. Brewers Player Development or MiLB.com will update us formally.

Jhoan Cruz got a mention in yesterday's FanGraphs Scouting Notebook...

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/a-thursday-scouting-notebook-5-6-2021/

I saw the 20-year-old Cruz during the spring and he already has a plus changeup, one that got Tyler Soderstrom to swing and and miss twice in the same at-bat. He’s a Lilliputian 5-foot-9, a trait that runs through many Brewers minor league pitchers as, I’ll speculate, they’ve been on the lookout for low release heights. He was only 87-90 with the fastball when I saw him and Cruz’s slider in the 78-83 mph range looked below-average to me, but this is a loose, athletic 20-year-old with an out pitch.

AUDIO via the "Bosh to the Bigs" Tar Heels Baseball Podcast: 2019 18th round pick out of UNC, corner infielder Ashton McGee spent 2019 with the Maryvale Gold club. He now gets to play very close to home with the Mudcats, one of the talking points in the discussion here.

His interview, recorded this week, begins at the 30:30 minute mark (or with 16:10 remaining in the podcast, depending on what your browser displays).

Jackson Gillis makes his pro debut: Appears in two games for the Carolina Mudcats — both successful outings from the bullpen

By Jamie Pote, Wilmington (MA) Town Crier Sports Editor

Nice feature article on the 2019 13th round LHP out of Vanderbilt

As noted within, the most recent pro player from Wilmington MA was RHP Jason Bere (who was a Milwaukee Brewer in 1999 and 2000).

Thanks Mass, sounds like a coachable kid with good stuff. Love the way the analytics are being used in the minors

Fun Facts:

Felix Valerio leads the club in steals with 16 (16-19 SB-Att). You might guess Joe Gray would be 2nd on the team. No, but he is 12-12.

Its 6'-6", 229lb 1B Ernesto Martinez who is 15-17. Now that is two very different looking players. Valerio is 5'7" 165 lbs.

The club has a number of players swiping bags with Weimer and Holt both swiping 12-14.
