Lauer starting tomorrow

markedman5

I was pretty shocked they pulled the plug on Lauer last season so quickly. I don't remember his 2nd start, but his 1st start felt like a LOT of bad luck ground balls finding holes, and I remember thinking he pitched well.

I'll be happy to see him get a longer leash in the rotation for now, even if his next start is bad. I don't really see a better option right now.

I wasn't shocked...he pitched terribly in his first start.......3 innings 5 hits including a homer and 2 doubles.... 6 earned runs 3 walks and a hit batter

He then followed that up with a 3 2/3 inning start 7 earned runs 9 hits including a homer and 2 doubles....2 walks and a hit batter.

5 line drives in the first start......8 in the 2nd.

He was god awful and the Brewers were fighting for a playoff spot.

He has been much better so far this season.....but he couldn't have been much worse in 2020.

If the Brewers are going with a 6 man rotation in 2021, then I think Lauer should be given a little bit of leash to see what they have in him. I don't think he's a world beater by any stretch but I view him and Houser as truly viable #4-#5 for the long term behind Burnes, Woodruff and Peralta.

If the Brewers stick with a 5 man rotation for now, I think Lauer should be in the pen as a long man. Hader, Williams, Suter, Boxberger, Lauer, Richards is a decent to good start to the bullpen. Finding another good arm or two to fill the remaining roles should become easier as we get closer to July.

I wonder if the Brewers have any intention to have Ashby or Small potentially fill bullpen roles later in the year?

The Brewers (along with a lot of teams) talked about using a six-man rotation, so now might be a good time to start. It will help assure that our pitchers are able to make it through the season, and we have six viable starters on the roster. Lauer has looked good against the two best teams in the National League, so he deserves a few more starts. Any other year, I wouldn't think going to a six-man rotation would make sense, but this year it does, and now seems like a good time to get it going.

As you mentioned, for the longer term it will also allow the Brewers to see Lauer and Houser in action to see if they can stick in the rotation. Imagine having five decent, young-ish starters locked up for a few years with a few other promising arms in the upper minors. Historically, it has been tough for the Brewers to find one above average pitcher at any given time. It's nice to dream about the possibilities.

Looking at the schedule they play 6 of the next 7 days, then a day off, then 16 straight, then a day off, then 17 straight until the All Star break. That's 39 games in 42 days.

As long as everyone is healthy & effective I wouldn't be surprised if they ride the 6 man rotation until the break & re-assess then.

I would be surprised. It's necessary after the DH to get everyone back on 4 days rest. Then Lauer goes to the pen, where they do need another at least serviceable arm.

They've pitched their starters on 5 days rest almost exclusively so far this season. Sometimes rest days allows that, but when there have been that many straight games without rest they've used a 6th starter. So you should probably expect to be surprised. If surprise worked that way..

It's only been three starts, but if he continues to pitch through All-Star break the way he has up to this point, it may be Houser or Anderson who ends up in the pen for the second half of the year. He has to continue to pitch well, but it would be a great "problem" if they had too many starting pitchers for the second half.

I agree. I think Lauer should be given a shot to get the number 4 spot. Maybe he isnt going to continue his success, but if he does he fits our rotation so well. Even if he doesnt get the 4 or 5 spot with the high potential of injury (especially to Anderson) Lauer is likely to get a lot of starts

Hasn't cc already come out and said they are basically doing a 6 man rotation this year?

The way the guys with the press clippings have had a bump or two in the road lately, we need to be setting up Lauer to max out his playoff starts. Only half blue.

I think it's time that we start to consider that this team quite possibly has 5 (!!!) potentially top end starters, with a young gun in Ashby waiting in the wings.

I think maybe you are jumping the gun calling Lauer and Houser "top end starters."

Yes, they have been impressive as of late, but top end?

Top end to me is a #1 or #2, they are not that..........yet.

Well, he did qualify it as "potentially top end starters", to be fair.

Doubt Lauer has the potential to be top end but don't want to minimize what he has done either. It puts the Brewers in good position to not have to acquire starting pitching this upcoming off season. The Brewers have certainly given large contracts out to older and not as good versions of Houser/Lauer in the past so would great if they don't have to do that again for a while.

Well, I did include "potentially" LOL.

I am realist enough to know that sometimes guys just have good outings here and there. And it isn't like Houser and Lauer have come out of nowhere. Both had somewhat established track records coming into 2021. Both came off pretty terrible COVID 2020 seasons as well. Both may possibly regress.

But heck, there have been plenty of years where I'd be more than happy to say that Houser or Lauer was this team's #1 guy. Yeah, that doesn't mean that they are legit #1 MLB starters, but when you have been cheering for this team, and its ramshackle starting rotations as long as I have, you take what you can get.
