If Lauer can actually live up to being a supposed Dodger Killer I might be able to stomach the 85 mph fastballs with 35 seconds between pitches. I am not optimistic.

I thought Lauer threw low 90s with his fastball?

Looks li,em the Dodgers are also pushing back their rotation a day which means we miss Buehler as well as Kershaw.

CC told us this was going to happen this year because of the concern about innings after the short 2020 season

I wonder if this was the plan all along. It would explain why they didn't just use Lauer today and save the 40 man roster spot.

I would bet it was.

They are going to give guys extra rest from time to time and who knows maybe even skip starts once in awhile.

Looks kind of like they didn’t want to waste Peralta against Bauer.

I think it's just part of the workload management of going from a 60 to a 162 game season. Teams will handle it in different ways; Brewers will generally keep pitch counts fairly low I would think, and temporarily going to a 6-man rotation is another way. I would expect we'll see this any time there are a lot of consecutive games without offdays, that there will be spot starts made. That Lauer has a great record against the Dodgers might have contributed to this too, even if their lineup will look rather different to when he last played them.

Agreed, I think this is merely an indication they are going to try to keep their starters spaced out with 5 days of rest between starts. I don’t have any problem with that, I think it’s probably in the best long-term interest of rotation and I’m sure they have some data that supports better starts from pitchers on 5 days rest as opposed to 4 days rest.

Lauer v. Bauer didn’t go so well last year, but Lauer’s Padres won the matchup (3-2) the first time the two faced off against each other in 2019.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

The dislike for Lauer is really over the top. He's pitched a whopping total of 11.0 innings for the Brewers. Before 2020, which I hardly even count as a real season, he was a solid back-end starter in >50 starts. Decent projections. Left handed. Still just 25!

He should be part of a permanent six-man rotation.

Counsell mentioned in his post-game press conference the Brewers indeed wanting their starters to get 5 days of rest between starts. If that’s the case they’ll have to figure out who is going to start next week in place of this Anderson/Godley spot.

Here is how the rotation is setting up for the remainder of this streak of games without a bye (assuming they stick with the 5 days of rest, and give Lauer another turn for this stretch with a 6th starter). I believe May 4th is the first day Anderson is eligible to come off the 10-day IL.

April 29 vs. LAD - Lauer

April 30 vs. LAD - Peralta

May 1 vs. LAD - Woodruff

May 2 vs. LAD - Burnes

May 3 vs. PHI - Houser

May 4 vs. PHI - TBD

May 5 vs. PHI - Lauer

May 6 vs. PHI - Peralta

May 7 vs. MIA - Woodruff

May 8 vs. MIA - Burnes

May 9 vs. MIA - Houser

May 10 - BYE

Not just “at Night” anymore.

They really could use another starter. It's pretty slim pickings even when fully healthy after you get past the first 5. And even some of their better ones aren't particularly efficient. It's still a really good rotation because Burnes and Woodruff are awesome, just not much depth.

I wouldn't have a problem with a 6 man rotation but if it's going to be permanent I'd rather see a pretty established mid rotation guy or at least a young starter with some upside. .

I guess right now given their options, Lauer is probably their best bet, but I'm not super comfortable with it. I know it's only 11 innings but he's been brutally bad. He was brutally bad in the spring.

Whoever he was pitching in San Diego in an extremely pitcher friendly park, he hasn't been that guy since.

It feels like we are just conceding two games in a row with our last two starters.

Is this really the best we can come up with?

If so, poor planning.

One starter goes down with an injury and we are left with total and complete garbage to fill out the rotation?

Maybe rather than going out and getting an all defense outfielder that we didn't really need, we should have put some cash into a starting pitcher?

Based on the injuries we have had this year I'm not really sure how you can say we didn't need another outfielder? You can be disappointed about either the cost or the performance of JBJ so far but without him, we would just be discussing how we should have brought in another guy for the inevitable Cain and Yelich injuries that is forcing us to play a combination of McKinney, Garcia, Taylor, and Ray for 3 weeks. Of those four, only Garcia is proven at the MLB level and as discussed in multiple other threads, his track-record is average at best.

I see your point.

We all knew Anderson would have a trip or 5 on the IL this year, so being caught with our pants down predictible.

Same thing with Cain and Yelich, however, I don't think we had to spend the $ we did on Bradley, a defensive wizard but nothing else. We could have gotten a cheaper option for a reserve OF and spent the cash on a starting pitcher.

Either way, we were doomed from the start, which goes back to my "poor planning" statement.
