After facing 21 straight right-handed starting pitchers to begin the season the Brewers finally draw a left-handed starter. Unfortunately Trevor Rogers, the 13th overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft out of high school, is a pretty good one. It’ll be interesting to see what lineup they go with today, they are also set to face another Marlins southpaw tomorrow (Daniel Castano).
Not just “at Night” anymore.

Going to have to assume Taylor gets a start for sure.

Avi really deserves a day off after yesterday, but it's probably not the best day for it.

Man, I really didn't realize how slim the pickings are for RH bats on this roster until we finally faced a lefty starter. Might need to add another righty bat at some point this season.

Burnes is "must see tv."

Tyrone is a must start, please give Garcia bench time after the stunt he pulled yesterday.

CC doesn't usually punish guys for that kind of thing, but it must be done.

Make a statement.

It will be interesting to see what happens here. Logic would dictate that they'd want Garcia in the lineup against a tough lefty. If he doesn't start today, I would be 100% sure it's as a punishment.

I don't think CC has to make a statement by sitting Garcia, to be honest. Garcia isn't known for what he did yesterday and I'm sure regrets it. Sometimes a better call is to have a conversation with that player, reinforce hustling at all times, and then sticking by your guy to give him a boost and get his mind back into playing baseball. With a lefty on the mound, I'd want Garcia in there for the team's sake.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

So restorative justice then?

The difference between today's behaviors and behaviors from the past.

Not only in baseball, but life as well.

Consequences have become a thing of the past.

Good defensively and it stacks some good guys at the top that are good against lefties.

Not all consequences of the past worked or were right. I think managers, like humans, can evolve and make smart decisions with their players. There is more than one way to do things...

+1. I have 6 kids and manage 20 engineers (there are a lot of similarities in my work and home life :laughing ). You can't have one way to teach/coach/discipline with a large team. You have to know the individual and tailor it to what will work for him.

What did I miss with Garcia that would require a benching? Only saw bits and pieces of the game yesterday. Checked the game thread from yesterday, did he not tag up and advance on a fly ball or something?

Pop fly to 2nd. Didn't run it out and they turned it into a double play.

Ahh, I'll trust you guys on it. I feel if CC was going to send a message to Avi he'd have pulled him from that game, unless it was too late to make a difference.

Who are the Marlins? After making the playoffs and winning a playoff series last year, they jettisoned their GM. Most of their regular starters are in their 30s: Jesus Aguilar, Miguel Rojas, Corey Dickerson, Starling Marte, Adam Duvall, Garrett Cooper. Their rotation is all players in their early 20's, but the bullpen is mostly journeyman pitchers in their 30s.

Another example of a franchise with no direction: not enough talent to compete and a pile of mediocre veterans soaking up playing time.

I mean, that starting rotation is no joke and they are all very young as you mentioned. They've got a lot of veteran position players that are most likely just placeholders until a couple of prospects push them out. I know it's the Marlins, but I could see them going after a bigger FA bat or two in the next 2 years as their starting rotation matures even more. Alcantara, Lopez, Rogers, Sixto, they've got a really, really nice foundation. "No direction" seems pretty extreme.

Marlins are a perfect example of how fluky sixty games in a pandemic can be.

They are a rebuilding team with a top five or so farm system in MLB who are probably in line for another top five or so pick after this season.

538, PECOTA & FanGraphs all have them projected for 6th fewest wins in 2021 currently.

On the Avi issue, I would be satisfied if CC allowed him to apologize to the team and take responsibility for his error. Then lead by example from here on out. Somehow CC needs to be able to say that the issue was addressed even if done in private.

Would sound good, sure, but true answer is "this is 2021 and this stuff happens." Most players these days don't hustle on pop ups, routine grounders, etc. Even base hits and doubles, they run 3/4 speed or so and then turn it on if the ball is bobbled. Yoy rarely see players bust it hard and round the base. Avi's pop-up is a more extreme example, to be sure.
