billy mckinney appreciation thread; traded to mets 25 may

djoctagone
Had a next-door neighbor in the early 90s who wanted to be drafted so badly, just for a chance to keep playing. Waited through 60 rounds of the draft. Then the White Sox drafted their GM’s daughter, who was a softball player. That sucked. Poor guy didn’t get picked.

Yeah I think this is kind of why they've been reducing the number of rounds over the years (and this last year reducing the number of minor league teams overall). Too much filler in the minors and a lot of it is just a waste of time and money (For both sides really, it's not like the low minors players get paid much anyway).

The whole point this comes back to is there is a lot of freely available talent, sure it's nice to say we got something for a guy like McKinney or Knebal but really you're not actually gaining anything of value when there's an unlimited number of lottery tickets playing in the low minors, or independent ball, or 16 year old Dominicans, etc that can be had for virtually nothing and are realistically just roster filler.

Off to a hot start with the Mets through 12 games. Good for him.

In hindsight, the Brewers probably should have hung on to McKinney instead of Vogelbach. Oh well ... win some, lose some.

Obviously it's only been 12 games, but it does seem odd since Stearns and company seem to love versatility, especially the fringe guys.

McKinney's last month with the Brewers he went 9 for 59. His triple slash was .153/.227/.254

over the same period of time Vogelbach went 14 for 79. His triple slash line was .206/.316/.309.

Neither player is anything more than a stop gap, but Vogelbach was more productive for the Brewers than McKinney which is why he's still on the team.

In fact, since the McKinney trade Vogelbach has also played much better with a triple slash of .231/.394/.346

Okay, honestly, can someone please explain how we are even arguing over this? We traded away a guy we picked up for nothing, honestly sucked for us, for something that breathes. You cannot be telling people are upset a billion dollar franchise didn't, instead, take the $50k cash (or a $1, who knows) instead.

waiver claims, which was how billy mckinney was acquired by the brewers, cost the acquiring club $50,000.

Pretty sure they held onto Vogelbach for the DH next year

He's not really hitting well enough to justify playing him at DH on a regular basis. Hopefully he improves.

Since their four game sweep in Philadelphia at the beginning of May, Vogelbach has a triple slash line of .233/.361/.417. It would be nice if he had a little more slugging percentage, but a player with a .361 OBP even with middling power is a nice thing to have.
