2021-04-20: Brewers (Burnes) at Padres (Paddack) [Brewers win, 6-0 -- Burnes reaches 40 strikeouts without issuing a walk to start the season, the new major league record for a starter]

Lol, you guys are really overblowing the one play. It would have been a really nice play to make, but even a good defender isn't going to make EVERY above average possible catch. His aggressive attempt still kept the runner from scoring, I'll give him some points for that.

I mean it was a really bad read. That's what happened, it's not overblowing it. No one said it doesn't happen to the best of them.

Unless you can see with JBJ's eyes I'm not sure you can definitively state it was a bad read.

I think when watching it in real time he took a step in the bucket and that slowed him a step or two.

Ump seriously won't call a low strike for Burnes. Any borderline been a nope. While Paddick got at least 2.

Those were the right calls. They just missed. But I agree the call on Shaw for Paddack was a lousy one.

I’m in So Cal and San Diego the next two weeks for work. Tickets for all three teams are so expensive. I think I may need to bite the bullet and go to a game in SD. Haven’t been to that park yet. I could actually work a game in all three so cal parks during my time there. Would probably be north of $500 just for tickets, though.

Man, 40 K's with 0 walks is amazing.

Why would I need to see it with JBJ'S eyes? You can see him get a bad jump on it without having a view from centerfield.

Because it's clear he didn't know if the ball was hit deep or shallow right away. I can't watch a replay but judgements on balls hit right at you are the hardest to get a read on, the few moments it took for him to determine it was going to fall in front of him was all it took to turn an out into a hit.

Why do we get punished for the umpire getting in the way? When a ball hits the umpire in the field of play it's fair game.

Umpire is part of the field when it comes to a batted or thrown live ball, but if an ump impedes a defensive player, the play is automatically dead.

Every time someone gets a great jump the catcher can reach back and backhand the ump and it’s a dead ball? That’s some useful information to have right there, in more ways than one...

I mean, he definitely didn't read it right but it wasn't as easy of a read like angle we saw on television.

I’ll feel a lot better if they get through this Yardley inning unscathed.

EDIT: I think I’d forgot that Yardley is actually quite a bit more effective versus LHH than RHH.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Isn't....that the definition of a bad read?

Ok, but were you getting on him because he didn't catch it or are you only upset about the read? Because it seemed to me you felt it should have been an easy play, maybe I'm wrong.

I went back to look at it. Batter got it off the end of the bat. Super funky for a fly ball. I thought it was on JB at first, too, but I’m not too upset after seeing the replay.

I’m surprised at the discussion here on that JBJ play, I was amazed he got as close as he did. Not the best jump in the world but wow that guy can cover some ground.

Quick poll, do you define "batting around" as 9 guys coming to the plate in an inning or 10 guys? Internet seems mixed. Our broadcasters use the 9 guys definition and it drives me nuts. The 10th guy should have to come to the plate for it to be coming "around" full circle back to how the offense started the inning.

I feel like the 9 guys definition is like saying the big hand on the clock went around when it only went from the 12 to the 11.

Agree. Nine is batting through the order.

Need the leadoff man to hit twice to truly bat "around".

Yup. Didn't make the play, but still saved a run.

Yeah, my thought is 1.) it was a very difficult ball to read in the first place, 2.) he made an aggressive diving attempt at it and it still fell a foot in front of him. If he got a one foot better jump on it, it would have taken an amazing diving catch to make. If he had gotten a couple extra feet on the jump, it would have taken a really nice sliding catch. And if he had gotten a great jump on the ball, he may have made one of those catches in his gut that he's made on a couple balls this year, which still would have been an above average play.

It was a good play just to keep it in front of him and keep the runner from scoring.

Gotta chuckle. Boxberger Ks Profar in 4 pitches. Battles Woody and Burnes with long ABs.

So McKinney can play 1st. Taylor can play LF. Hiura should be optioned.

Just a team control thought, Hiura has 1yr&114days Jader had 115days when pegged on Super 2. So you make it a sure safe thing after 10days not to lose that Super 2 cutoff by 1 day again.
