2021-04-16: Pirates (Brubaker) at Brewers (Houser) [Brewers lose, 6-1 -- Bullpen struggles continue]

Eye Black
Suter better get himself together. He has to be reliable for this pen to have a shot.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Suter is a guy who should not be put in the positions he is being put in imo. Counsell has to be a bit more creative.

Don't know who else he should have used there. It's just not a deep pen by any stretch.

Houser probably should have been given the chance to pitch through 1st and 2nd and 1 out. Roll a dp and get out of it. I agree the pen is very shallow so why are we going to it early??

Pen has sucked but this kind of offensive game is happening way too often. There are going to be games you need to win 7-6. I don't think this team will win too many of them, but we are getting one-hit through 6 or 7 way too often. You can't rely on a bullpen every night to keep you close in game in which you haven't scored.

Sure hope the offense shows up. Have to win this series, but the Pirates always seem to give the Brewers fits.

I mean.... no?

The Pirates have had 4 winning seasons against the Brewers in the past 14 years. Two of those were 10-9.

“Giving fits” doesn’t necessarily mean have a losing record. I am not good at locating stats, but I recall the other contenders in the division having a far better record vs. the Pirates than the Brewers did, making it that much more difficult for the Brewers to gain ground.

I do remember the seasons when the Brewers dominated the Pirates, but those years are likely in the older years in your 14-year stretch. It’d be interesting to see the Brewers record vs. the Pirates compared to the rest of the division vs. the Pirates in the last decade. I’m assuming the 2011 Brewers did well against the Pirates as they did well against pretty much everyone.

Who do you put in there instead? Williams is being eased into games and Hader is the only other shut down option. I know most don't want to admit it but the majority of our bullpen kind of sucks.

I know it's early but I still think the reds are the team to beat in the division.

Better duck, someone here is going to throw something at you...

This was posted on Twitter the other day just prior to Suter’s last appearance...

Brent Suter since returning from Tommy John surgery in September 2019:

56.2 IP

2.06 ERA

2.75 FIP

3.10 SIERA

26.5% Hard Hit

25.9% K%

Bradley has been so bad this season. If Cain and Yelich were not hurt he may have buried himself on the bench already.

Really?

You think he would be benched for not hitting?

Not bloody likely!

There you go Tyrone! Give him a start tomorrow

I feel like Taylor, now 27 years old, still has a non-zero chance to develop into an everyday major leaguer if given a chance. Going back to last season he’s had some really impressive power swings.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Shaw's had a couple of chances and left 5 on base

I mean he hit a ball 108-mph right up the middle. I’m not sure he really let anyone down on that contact.

BTW, that was the second hardest hit ball of the game (for either team) behind only Tyrone Taylor (109.3-mph).

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Up by 5+, down by 5+, Suter is your man. Any other time......

Suter has been really good out of the pen over the past year. He definitely isn’t a “mop up” pen arm.

His ERA is 4.18 (including today) out of the pen the last couple of years. Maybe not mop up, but not good. More importantly, he's allowed 7 of 10 inherited runners to score. So at the very least, how about using him to start an inning only?
