2021-04-16: Pirates (Brubaker) at Brewers (Houser) [Brewers lose, 6-1 -- Bullpen struggles continue]

The Pirates are coming off a 4-game series split with the Padres. While their pitching isn’t great, the Pirates have actually shown some pretty good life with the bats of late.

It’s sort of a tough lineup for Adrian Houser who has historically struggled against left-handed hitters. Two of the Pirates top LHHs have had success against Houser in small samples, Colin Moran (6-for-9, HR) and switch-hitter Bryan Reynolds (3-for-6, HR, 2-BB). Other LHHs possibly facing Houser this evening include Adam Frazier, Gregory Polanco, and Dustin Fowler (Pirates also have non-staters that can swing from the left side in catcher Michael Perez and switch-hitter Wilmer Difo. Like the Brewers, the Pirates are well suited to face-off against RHPs this season.

Ke’Bryan Hayes is on the 10-day IL, but in his absence 3B Phillip Evans has been really good. In 45 plate appearances Evans is hitting .342 BA / .444 OBP / .632 SLG / 1.076 OPS.

From the Brewers perspective I actually dislike this matchup against the Pirates a lot more than going up against the Cubs current lineup. It seems likely the Brewers bats are going to need to take advantage of the Pirates pitching because I think the Pirates will be able to score some runs this weekend.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

The Pirates are coming off a 4-game series split with the Padres.

Can we put this atop each game thread as a reminder that we will lose some games against the Pirates this season? And that even when we do, things can still be okay.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I was surprised to see how many of the Pirates hitters seem to be off to a good start. I don't know anything about this Evans guy but I did some Googling and Pittsburgh seems pretty high on him after success in a small sample size last year (not even the full short season, he missed a bunch of time due to an injury) and off to a good start in another small sample this year. He'll be one to watch, for sure.

I'm glad we have Woodruff/Burnes set up for the Padres series, but that does leave us a bit vulnerable against the Pirates. Hopefully at least Houser/Peralta can pitch well.

So good to have baseball back. I almost didn't know what to do with myself yesterday! I agree, I definitely think we need to go in to this series knowing they are going to put up a great fight. I'm hoping for the offense to continue the momentum as of late.

Considering the season started with 12 straight games against teams who were in the playoffs last year (and each cumulatively have won more games than Milwaukee the last two years) it's fantastic they're sitting at 7-5.

If they could manage to take 2 of 3 from the Pirates this weekend (Bucs have been outscored 52-68 on the year), they'd be in really great shape to go out west even if they end up laying an egg in San Diego.

No Yelich in tonight's lineup.

Why again haven't they put him on the IL?

Because they thought he wouldn’t be out this long and they think they are still covered.

Back soreness issues are hard to gauge exactly......this will be his 4th game missed( assuming he doesn’t pinch hit) that’s still a long way from 10.

My guess is he’s probably close( tomorrow or next day)which explains why they aren’t putting him on the IL now.

Whoever was 99% sure Yelich would be in the lineup tonight was 100% wrong.

If he’s not ready yet, might as well put him on the IL and give him the full 10 days.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

His last game played was on Sunday (April 11). I believe if they put him on the 10-day IL he wouldn’t be eligible to return until next Friday (well technically next Thursday, but the Brewers don’t have a game that day).

How patient you can be with a guy is directly proportionate to how valuable they are.

With a guy like Robertson or Lindblom, you wouldn't let them go day to day for more than 2-3 days without ILing them and getting a replacement here.

With someone like Yelich, it's worth going a man down if you can get him back after 6 or 7 games versus ILing him and losing him for an addition 3-4 just to have an extra minor league replacement on board.

With that said, I do think the Brewers have not really managed their IL as well as I'd like to see, but with someone like Yelich I can understand going day to day for an extended period.

They can retroactively do it right?
