The Cubs COVID related issues continue...

The Cubs today selected INF Ildemaro Vargas from the South Bend Alternate Site.

INF Matt Duffy has been placed on the COVID-19 related IL.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Yelich remains out of the lineup again this evening.

Per Adam McCalvy... Counsell on Christian Yelich (back): "Improving, but we're going to hold him out of the lineup today."

Hiura is back in the #2 spot. It could be a really dumb theory, but I felt like Hiura was well suited for batting 6th right now since it’s a lower pressure spot for him to get at bats.

Speaking of the 6th spot, has anyone ever looked at JBJs career splits batting in the 6th spot? For his career he has a .831 OPS when batting 6th (466 plate appearances) which is by far his best of any spot in the batting order where he’s had 200+ PAs.

Batting order very well might be silly and meaningless, but I do wonder if certain hitters change their mentality and approach a bit based on where they fall within the order. Regardless, I’ll admit that based on tonight’s collection of hitters guys like Hiura and JBJ probably should be batting in the top five.

Lastly, a bit surprised they are going with just two left-handed hitting position players versus Kyle Hendricks. His pitching splits aren’t extreme by any means, but he’s been tougher on RHH than LHH over his career.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Since Yelich is out again tonight I have to assume he’ll be out tomorrow too and they’ll decide after the off day on Thursday if he’ll be going on the IL.
Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I’ll give it to Trent Grisham, he’s certainly a fast starter. Padres are playing the Pirates this week. Grisham now has three home runs to go with a single, a double, and two walks in his first 13 plate appearances since returning from the IL with a hamstring injury. He was out of this world good to start last season and then trailed off considerably, curious to see how this season plays out for him.

Hendricks not starting

On the one hand, Alec Mills no hit the Brewers last season.

On the other hand, he hasn’t thrown more than 40 pitches in an appearance yet this year, and that season high 40 pitch appearance was just three days ago (April 10).

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I'm not sure I understand. The Nationals got shut down for 5 days due to some type of COVID outbreak but the Cubs are just moving ahead all systems go. Not sure what the difference is in the two situations to be honest.

I think the Nationals had a lot of players test positive. The Cubs have had negative tests, just some close contacts to a coach who tested positive.

I thought Duffy had tested positive but perhaps not. Two coaches though and obviously not everyone tests positive right away.

Kyle Hendricks was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday versus the Brewers due to an apparent illness.

Per the Cubs' official Twitter feed, Hendricks "is not feeling well" and won't take the mound "out of an abundance of caution." Alec Mills is going to fill in against Milwaukee. Cubs bullpen coach Chris Young recently tested positive for COVID-19, along with first base coach Craig Driver, and the team has already placed four players (Brandon Workman, Jason Adam, Dan Winkler, Matt Duffy) on the COVID IL.

Those players are on the list because they were close contacts. They did not test positive.

Duffy joins relievers Brandon Workman, Jason Adam and Dan Winkler on the list after two coaches -- first base coach Craig Driver and bullpen coach Chris Young -- tested positive recently.

Cubs manager David Ross said none of the players tested positive, but the team is being careful considering the condition of the coaches.
