Worth watching how the Mets-Marlins game ended if you haven’t seen it yet. This is the Mets broadcasters here upset with how the game ended even though the bad call benefited the Mets:

Unbelievable. Kudos to the Mets announcers for calling their own team out rather than defending that crap.

MLB needs to make whether or not the hitter attempted to get out of the way a reviewable call and actually call it. That's never called. What is wrong with that homeplate ump? He was literally going to call it a strike. How can he say Conforto tried to get out of the way?

I actually never liked it when Vina used to throw his body into a pitch but not sure even he was ever as egregious as that one. I know if I was an umpire, guys that do that would never get away with it.

Completely agree that it needs to be reviewable. Right now hitters have plenty of incentive to lean into inside pitches. If the ball does make contact with the batters elbow the odds it gets called correctly are unfortunately not very high. In that case I am shocked the home plate ump went from ready to call a strike to calling it a HBP. Wouldn’t you take a second to criticality think through the fact a batter was just by a pitch you saw as in the strike zone.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Letting Wainwright off the hook today. We should have 2-3 runs instead of just 1 on a gift.

Not sure we are letting him off the hook as much as he is just getting off the hook. Cain has stung the ball twice with RISP. Could easily be 6-0.

JBJ's at bat against Wainwright was disappointing. A lot of his curveballs are not strikes and he was hacking at everything.

It's frustrating watching Wainwright get out of these innings so far with only 1 run scored and that on 2 errors. They need to hang a big inning on him or I feel like they'll regret it.

Three thoughts came to mind:

(1) Ban the protective armor, then Conforto doesn't stick his elbow out without the potential of suffering injury. That would eliminate some of those situations, though with a chance to win the game, it might be worth doing.

(2) Don't know if it were possible to do, but that would've been a good time for the umpire crew to confer and have someone ask the question of the home plate umpire: "Was that a strike you were calling? If so, then the HBP should be overruled by that."

(3) It would seem to be feasible to make those situations reviewable and somewhat objective with the technology we have like in soccer and tennis to create lines. Determine planes at the edge of the plate; if body parts enter that zone over the plate and are struck by the pitch, then it's not a HBP.

Since we are likely to have an automated strike zone in the near future I assume the technology calling the pitch a strike would automatically overrule the HBP call?

On the Conforto Hbp, his elbow certainly was flared out but he didnt lean in to the ball like Contreras has blatantly done. Need to suspend and fine a batter doing that 1 game pay included to the opposing pitcher's charity of choice.

If that's not blatantly leaning into a ball, I'm not sure what is.

Am I the only one who thinks the Burnes story is kinda under reported?? The guy comes up is great in helping us get to the playoffs. The next year he basically is the worst pitchers in baseball and has to be sent to exile island. Then comes back and is now basically unhittable and one of the five best pitchers in baseball. Outside of Halladay who else has done this??

Greinke had a 33 start 5.80 ERA season.
